Due to trends such as increasingly inter-organizational careers, the concept of employability is ... more Due to trends such as increasingly inter-organizational careers, the concept of employability is high on the agenda of employees, employers, and pol icy makers. To improve our understanding of this concept, we need to understand thoroughly its measurement. We performed a Rasch analysis of Van der Heijde and Van der Heijden's (2006) seminal employability scale to investigate the psychometric properties of the instrument based on a dataset of 167 Austrian employees. The results suggest that the five competences of Van der Heijde and Van der Heijden's (2006) employability scale n occupational expertise, anticipation and optimization, personal flexibility, corporate sense, and balance n vary in difficulty to agree with. The results suggest a progression of the competences of employability. This view has not been very strong in previous work. This contribution focuses on the way in which employees and managers perceive themselves and each... more This contribution focuses on the way in which employees and managers perceive themselves and each other. Based on two PhD-projects, one in which differences between self-ratings and supervisor ratings have been studied, and one in which the focus was the differences between team leaders' self-perception and the team members' perception, it was concluded that supervisors and employees have a different view on the competencies and behavior of one another. Some explanations for these results are given. Also, implications for competence development and appraisal of employees and managers will be described.

This will have implications for occupational health work in health care. The European NEXT-Study (www. next-study. net, funded by EU) investigates working conditions of nurses in ten European countries and provides the opportunity to evaluate the role of health with respect to age and the consideration of leaving nursing. 26,263 female registered nurses from Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, England, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia were eligible for analysis. In most countries, older nurses considered leaving the profession more frequently than younger nurses. 'Health' was--next to 'professional opportunities' and 'work organisational factors'--strongly associated with the consideration of leaving nursing. Goede benutting en verdere ontwikkeling van deze resources is dan ook van het grootste belang. RichtHRM zich grofweg op de optimale benutting van human resources,hrd heeft vooral tot taak deze resources verder te ontwikkelen. In deze bijdrage zullen we proberen aan te tonen dat in beide gevallen een meer bedrijfskundige benadering gewenst is. Hoewel de term ‘bedrijfskundig’ bijna net zo vaag is als ‘strategisch’ (een ander voorvoegsel dat vaak gehanteerd wordt), prefereren we de eerste term omdat daarmee uitgedrukt wordt dat een betere afstemming op de bedrijfsprocessen momenteel een van de belangrijkste opgaven is, waarvoorHRM enhrd zich geplaatst zien. Eerst geven we aan waarom mensen belangrijker zijn geworden voor het succesvol functioneren van ondernemingen en instellingen in al hun facetten. Vervolgens schetsen we welke gevolgen dat heeft voor arbeidsrelaties en, meer specifiek, voor het psychologisch contract tussen de organisatie en de individuele medewerker. Daarna gaan we in op de vraag welke gevolgen dat zou moeten hebben voor de besturing van die arbeidsrelaties, zijndeHRM . Vervolgens worden de implicaties voorhrd geschetst. Tot slot gaan we in op de valkuilen en aanbevelingen ten aanzien vanemployability -beleid voor ouderen.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, public servants in many countries were mandated to work from home. ... more During the COVID-19 pandemic, public servants in many countries were mandated to work from home. The unprecedented nature of the situation entailed considerable challenges for providing adequate HR support. In this study, we explored how Dutch public servants experienced mandatory homeworking by conducting a template analysis. Based on in-depth analyses of 985 written accounts, we inductively expanded an a priori template derived from the Job-Demands-Resource (JD-R) framework, to understand and analyze how public servants experienced their new situation. We found that components of mandatory homeworking trigger different experienced resources and demands with divergent consequences for different employees. Our study raises awareness about the effects of contextual factors, specifically personal background characteristics and working conditions, that are important to understand their divergent experiences with mandatory homeworking. Our findings are translated into propositions that extend the JD-R model. We end with lessons to create sustainable (home)working conditions in government.

One key career transition during emerging adulthood is the school-to-work transition. As careers ... more One key career transition during emerging adulthood is the school-to-work transition. As careers have become much more dynamic and complex, this particular has also become more challenging for young adults. In this chapter, the authors explain how the school-to-work transition has changed and how individual agency and structural factors can interact to lay an early foundation for sustainable career development. In line with this, the authors argue that career competencies and employability are crucial concepts for today’s school-to-work transition. Finally, they look forward to how future research might contribute to further understanding the contemporary school-to-work transition. In all, this chapter argues that an adaptive school-to-work transition is crucial as a building block for long-term sustainability of careers.
