The hawthorn tree, otherwise known as the Fairy Tree, is sacred in Irish mythology. It is said to be home to the 'good people' (who shall not be named 'fairies' as that is considered rather rude) and so is never to be damaged or removed lest you wish to face the wrath of the folk!
