Hevea brasiliensis

Hevea brasiliensis, the Para rubber tree, sharinga tree, or, most commonly, the rubber tree, is a tree belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is the most economically important member of the genus Hevea. It is of major economic importance because the milky latex extracted from the tree is the primary source of natural rubber.

The 25th July 2021 marks 400 years of botanical research and teaching by the University of Oxford. The primary source of natural rubber is cultivated from the latex in Hevea Brasiliensis trees. Hevea Brasiliensis is a species native to the Amazon rainforest in South America which is housed by nine different countries. To this day, we still have not found another plant species that produces a higher quality latex.

Hevea Brasiliensis: Tapped rubber tree with a cup to collect liquid latex. The milky-white fluid runs along the cut on the bark and flows into the receptacle. After about six hours, the fluid stops flowing. In that six-hour period, a tree can usually produce a liter of fluid latex. The tree can be tapped again with another fresh cut, usually the next day.
