It’s not necessary.

Consider all the big machines that plant field tulips by the millions. Do they turn every bulb upright in field plantings? Nope. We had this realization and we’re never going back. 🤣

Here’s our method: We open a 3ft wide trench. We make it 6-8 inches deep, so we can get some nice extra stem length on our tulips. We use a tiller to loosen the soil and make digging the trench a lot easier. We pour our bulbs 500 at a time into the trench bed and just quickly smooth them out into a single layer. Both ladies have wonderful blog posts with more detailed information, but this is the gist of why/how: During a snowy stretch of winter a couple seasons ago I had an entire low tunnel of ranunculus decimated within days by VOLES! These are teeny sneaky rodents that love to eat bulbs/corms/tubers and are experts at hiding from natural predators when they have snow cover hiding them. In the seasons since I’ve built these temporary raised beds with a layer of hardware wire on the bottom and top! I know I know it’s tempting and the shops are FULL of bulbs but it’s too warm and they are at risk of an awful disease which could stop you growing them for years!

🌷Tulip bulb planting can commence once the temperatures have dropped consistently which is often around the end of October but it all depends where you live in the country as temperatures vary dramatically!

🌷There is NO rush and tulips can be planted as late as December.

🌷The disease they CAN get planted early is called tulip fire and it will stop them flowering, will make them shrivelled and brown and you won’t be able to grow tulips in the same spot for a few years!
