Last February, I made a music video for BenBen’s upcoming track Algorithmia, which deals with how the algorithm, in its many guises, shapes cultural production for the worst. So naturally it seemed like a great time to try out various new algorithms just starting to creep into the art conversation via neural-net-generated imagery, and I spent a couple weeks creating video of endless imagined rock bands. And today and tomorrow you can catch it (for free, streaming!) in the Everything Ab-Sonic program at the Supernova Digital Arts Festival in Denver! (Or catch in a proper theater at the Sie Film Center on September 23rd.) This is, at last, the world premiere!

Odd and intoxicating vapors wafted out by night, but nothing that fell in from above ever came out.
Last October, I was paired with microbiologist Farah Abdul-Rahman for the most recent edition of the Imagine Science Film Festival’s Symbiosis Competition. We met for the first time as the festival began, and the following week was a flurry of exchanged script ideas and bits of animated yeast from Farah’s work leading up to two days of late night shoots at NYU and rapid editing. Farah and I co-wrote and co-directed, she starred and did the voiceover, and we fortunately had help from mutual friend (and also microbiologist) Ramin Rahni on all the exquisite sound design. Monocellular debuted on the closing night of the festival, and to our delight has since shown at the 57th Academia Film Olomouc in the Czech Republic and received the Science + Imagination Award from Sci-On (wherein it played in a planetarium in Reno Nevada!) This weekend, the film showed in the UK at the Bristol Science Film Festival and will be streaming as part of that event this coming Monday at 2:30. So, I finally made a trailer!

Deteriorating connections in Light Leak.
Continuing to recap recent film travels, Light Leak is currently up for one more week at Frame & Frequency VIII, at VisArts in Rockville Maryland. Send me a photo if you see it!
Following its Imagine Science premiere and Cosmic Rays (which was a joy to attend!), the film got its International premiere in Scotland at the fantastic Alchemy (which would be a joy to attend someday!), then last month visited Tranås at the Fringe in Sweden and Signs of the Night in Bangkok. Next stop: unknown.
