Two rituals of Spring in New York: Phagwah, or Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, and Biur Chametz, the Burning of the Bread at the start of Passover.








They had been lodged for the night in a hotel on the rim of the airport, resembling all such places and in fact one of a row of nearly identical edifices, edged in parking lots and official landscaping. But there were, in fact, differences. The lack of bar or other amenities in theirs drove them out into surrounding neighborhood, to the seemingly duplicate hotel block next door and among the sleeping houses webbed with impasses and dead ends as the land artificially rose and fell to incorporate the truck routes and freeways that spun in a tangle away from the hub of the airport.
