The bee did not have a name until 2000, when Kristine Tong, a fifth grade student, won a national contest to name the bee, dubbing him "BuzzBee",  later shortened to Buzz. Buzz also appeared as the host in the Honey Nut Cheerios Spelling Bee game, which was named after the breakfast cereal. Buzz has been portrayed by several different voice actors. He was originally voiced by Arnold Stang until 1990.
