The chainmail hauberk was the most common type of armor in western Europe prior to the 13th Century (and still in use after that). It was made from rings of steel that were riveted or welded closed. To save time and cost, most modern reproductions of chainmail use links that are butted instead of welded or riveted so modern reproductions have only a fraction of the strength of REAL chainmail. It was more flexible than lamellar though not quite as protective. It was easy to wear on horseback.
