This year make some German Christmas cookie recipes for frosted nutcrackers, cinnamon stars, lebkuchens in bars, rounds & chocolate coated, pfeffernusse, springerle, sand tarts & dipped gingersnaps.

These spicy gingerbread-like bars, native to Nuremberg, Germany, are traditional holiday fare in that country. I brought this recipe over from Germany almost 20 years ago. It has molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, honey and brown sugar in it. This is one of my favorite memories of Germany at Christmastime.

Adapted from my friend Julie Majors recipe for Easiest Ever Gingerbread. I've made a few small changes: I used melted butter in place of softened, I used a mix of brown and granulated sugar, and I've upped the salt. I also use a slightly smaller pan. Notes: Molasses: I've used Grandma's and Crosby's here. Do not use blackstrap molasses. Salt: If you are using Morton Kosher salt or fine sea salt, use half as much by volume: 1/2 teaspoon or the same amount by weight.
