One of those compassionate individuals was Anna Coleman Watts Ladd, an American sculptor who moved to France with her husband in 1917.

GREAT WAR: The war's combatants were young men, who had to live with the results. That could be a loss of limb, damaged eyesight, or lung damage from mustard gas. Perhaps, the most difficult to deal with was a facial disfigurement. Recreated here is a a prosthetic mask used in lieu of plastic surgery to hide a veteran's facial disfigurement. The artist attempted to give back a bit of what was taken away.
