C... more Making and trading: An analysis of Merovingian beads from the Sittard-Kemperkoul burial ground. Chemical analyses and micro-CT scanning were used to analyse a set of c. 725 glass beads from a single Merovingian burial (number 11) in the Sittard-Kemperkoul burial ground (Sittard-Geleen, province of Limburg). Chemical analyses of the small, opaque, yellow beads that make up the majority of the collection showed that they were, in fact, not made of glass. Rather, they were made by fusing a lead-tin-based yellow colourant with quartz. For black beads, iron was added to this mixture. The other beads were made from glass – probably of re-used Roman origin – with various colourants. The micro-CT scans provided an unrivalled image of the various manufacturing techniques that were used to make the more complex, polychrome beads.

In the studies Archaeology and History at the University of Groningen, students are often asked to critically reflect on their studies. Why are we doing what we are doing and, especially, why should we get paid? This focus is understandable in our society that is focused on economic growth, resulting in little value being assigned to the humanities. However, because of this focus, we sometimes tend to forget why we are passionate about studying the past. In this article, I bring an ode to the study of the past to counter this. I believe the study of the past can bring a perspective to the present, makes it possible to imagine a future and can nuance the constant focus on linear progress. Furthermore, the people who have access to their past should be thankful for it, since this access is not a given for everyone.

In tegenstelling tot wat dit doet verwachten, hebben de opleidingen Archeologie en Geschiedenis aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen vrijwel niets met elkaar gemeen. In deze Hoog van de Toren een pleidooi voor betere samenwerking tussen beide, omdat de vakgebieden elkaar zowel inhoudelijk als theoretisch kunnen verrijken.

The earliest antiquarians took advantage of prominent burial monuments and other grave contexts in their search for curios and information about past societies. While burials tell us much about the ways in which people buried their dead, they have also been a valuable resource for reconstructing the ways in which people lived. Today, the technical advances made in the study of human remains themselves allow for more detailed study of past peoples than ever before. With that change has come an added responsibility concerning the proper handling of human remains. During this symposium, co-organised between the Universities of Groningen and Leiden, we aim to start a discussion between researchers interested in studying cultural and emotional aspects of burial practices, and those using human remains as a data source for lifestyle and population studies, to which the issue of ethical practices is crucial.
