Species provide a variety of functions and help maintain relatively stable ecosystems. Our understanding of the functioning of biodiversity within ecosystems needs to be improved. The information on the status and trends of biodiversity allows for patterns to be identified as well as to determine the consequences of biodiversity loss.

The Physical Parameters studied included Temperature, Light Penetration, Suspended solids and current velocity; the chemical parameters assessed were pH, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen and B.O.D. while nutrients like, Nitrate-Nitrogen, Inorganic Phosphorus, Silicate Silicon and Ammonia were also studied. The results showed varying levels of pollution influenced by the Industralization and urbanisation around the creek leading to the deterioration of the water quality of the creek.

Wetlands are one of the most threatened of all biomes on earth. Coimbatore is an important indust... more Wetlands are one of the most threatened of all biomes on earth. Coimbatore is an important industrial city of India which is located on the banks of the river Noyyal. Presently, there are 28 wetlands mostly fed by the river Noyyal. The prevailing drainage and sewerage system open into the adjoining wetlands and the river Noyyal without appropriate treatment. The river gets flooded only during monsoons while rest of the days it is almost dry. 15,974 acres of agricultural lands in and around the city are irrigated by the Noyyal river system. The river and the river-fed wetlands sustain a large number of plants and animals including migratory species of birds. Hence, in this study, the status and diversity of birds along the eight major urban wetlands of Coimbatore were focused. Total count method was used. During the survey we recorded 56 species of birds belonging to 15 orders. Threatened birds like Painted Stork, Spot-billed Pelican, Oriental White Ibis and Oriental Darter were observed in different wetlands in large numbers. The study clearly revealed that the Ukkadam Big Tank supports a higher diversity of birds in the urban settings of Coimbatore. Increased human interference along the wetlands was observed necessitating conservation measures for the urban bird habitats.

The study revealed insignificant difference in between the water quality of both the lakes. However it was observed that the water quality was slightly better in the manmade lake as compared to the natural lake. This is attributed to the physical protection to the manmade lake while the excess of anthropogenic activities deteriorated the natural lake water quality
