Igor Tyšš is a researcher at the Institute of World Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. In his research he deals with translation history, poetry translation, translation criticism, and the impact of communist ideology on translation. He collaborated on a number of larger Slovak research projects (mainly focusing on translation history). Igor Tyšš is both an interpreter and a translator, mostly of pragmatic texts (advertising, promotion, academic) and of artistic texts. He writes reviews. He is also a poet, published in journals and anthologies. In 2015 his debut poetry collection, Alba, came out. He has won several literary competitions. In 2016 his poetry collection was translated into Macedonian.

In our paper we discuss the beginnings of Slovak translation historyresearch, which have their roots in formalism and structuralism, and reconstruct lines of influence to the present when translation history is a lively, open, interdisciplinary,and empirical discipline. With the past in mind, we look at several of the most recent and significant research initiatives in Slovak translation history research and evaluate their potential for the future.

The author uses a bibliography of Slovak AVT resources, which he has been compiling since 2013, and combines the data with other relevant sources (microhistories, close reading of relevant articles, data from political and cultural history, etc.) to create a complex historiography that would retain the complexity of its object. In order to question the traditional paradigm of scientific research as progress, the author employs Foucault’s discourse analysis to critique the claim that having more publications means a better field and rounds up his discussion by suggesting that Slovak AVT theory is suffering from genesis amnesia (Bourdieu), since it is by and large ignoring its past.

Príspevok na podklade vlastného výskumu dobových prameňov a archívnych materiálov menovaného peri... more Príspevok na podklade vlastného výskumu dobových prameňov a archívnych materiálov menovaného periodika (vychádzalo v r. 1956 - 1970), na základe historiografických syntéz o kultúrnej histórii Československa v období po tzv. páde kultu osobnosti (Marušiak, 2001; Pažout, 2008, Knapík a kol., 2014 a pod.) a na základe dostupných spomienok pamätníkov mapuje a) postavenie časopisu Mladá tvorba (MT) na slovenskom literárnom trhu a vôbec v slovenskom kultúrnom kontexte; b) profiláciu novej generácie prekladateľov z okruhu prispievateľov MT; c) prítomnosť tzv. politického gesta (Bednárová, 2013) v MT; d) problematickú recepciu modernej americkej literatúry v MT. Uvedené okruhy spolu navzájom súvisia. Cieľom príspevku je poukázať na relevanciu výskumu dejín literárneho časopisectva pre tvorbu a precizovanie syntéz dejín umeleckého prekladu na Slovensku.

Drawing on the ontological (metatexts, Popovič, 1974) and on the spatial classifcation of text-derivation genres (paratexts, Genette, 1997), the study combines historical criticism (Pym, 2010) and pragmatic analysis (Verschueren, 2013) to interpret three metatext genres from the corpus. Tese include: metatextual apologetics, based on discourse mimicry; paratextual camouﬂage, based on contextualization; synthetizing translation, based on imitational and selective text derivation and quasi-metatext.

This monograph, which is a continuation of the research done as part of my PhD. thesis, is a soci... more This monograph, which is a continuation of the research done as part of my PhD. thesis, is a sociological survey of the history of Slovak Beat poetry translation (i.e. the works of A. Ginsberg, G. Corso, and L. Ferlinghetti) in the years 1956 – 1970. Its methodology is based on Pym’s multiple causation model (1998, 2010), Foucault’s models of discourse analysis and archeology (1970, 1981), and on Popovič’s theories of metatexts (1974, 1975) and literary education (1978). The historiography is based on sources taken from literary and cultural magazines of the era, namely the Mladá tvorba, the Slovenské pohľady, the Kultúrny život, the Romboid, and the Revue svetovej literatúry. The research presented in this monograph maps out the discourse on the Beatniks in the Slovak literary and lifestyle journal Mladá tvorba (1956 - 1970) as part of the cultural discourse in the era. Influences of the Beatniks are considered in the contexts of discourses on American literature and culture, on literature and culture in general, and on social problems of young people which the magazine covered in systematic manner in the 1960s. The research of the discourse on the Beatniks shows a deep and historically specific influence of Beat axiology on the world views of the young generation at that time. An alphabetically ordered bibliography of the corpus of the used historical sources is also part of the publication.
