Hello! Happy Good Friday to you! My twins had their Easter egg hunt at school today and learned the Bible verse, "He is risen!" Matthew 28:6. Last week we covered similes. Just wanted to share a few pictures and ideas for teaching this skill. First we watched this video and the kids LOVED it! It has a catchy little tune and it uses drawings and simile examples from kids their age. After it was over we talked about the ones they remembered and I told them they would draw one of their own. This week we've been completing some Rainbow Writing. Our first mini lesson focused on similes. The kids then wrote similes for each rainbow color. Today, kiddos wrote about what made them special. To spice it up a bit, we used foam stickers!

Who doesn't love a good simile or metaphor? Well, that was the focus for some of our activities this week. The first thing we did after reviewing them was add them into our center rotations. My kids are a busy bunch, so I came up with this Simile/Metaphor Sort: The blue cards include similes or metaphors and students sorted them into the respective categories. Are you looking for a fun way to teach students similes? Simile monsters are an easy, exciting way to get your students to practice figurative language in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade classrooms. This activity can be stretched out over a week, or can be taught in one day. Students will walk through the writing process by planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their writing into a fun and colorful craft. It makes a great bulletin board as well!
