What is wet on wet technique with watercolor?

Wet on wet technique in watercolor painting is a dynamic and fluid method that creates a range of effects from gentle color washes to vibrant, diffused patterns. The soft, blend of light and dark values or colors is where the magic lies in watercolor.

How do you do it??

It begins with wetting the paper, either in a specific area (as seen in this video!) or entirely, and then applying pigments while the surface is still damp. The water on the paper allows the pigments to spread and merge, creating smooth transitions and delicate color mixtures.

You want to learn how much water your canvas (or paper or fabric or plastic etc) can hold and how to manipulate that tension. I design my canvases specifically to hold a certain amount of water on the surface so that I have plenty of time to introduces as many pigments as I want and I know what will happen when I manipulate them with alcohol or more water. Transparent layers create vibrancy. When it dries, adding sharper edges wet-on-dry enhances the portrait. Notice the beautiful addition of finer details with warm and cool tones.. Merribeth Ainsworth on Instagram: "Here’s what they mean! ⤵️ 🟢🔵Wet on wet is when you paint clean water onto the paper, then add in your colours. This allows for smooth layers, and enables the paint to move an blend freely, creating beautiful patterns amongst the colour. ⚪️🟠Wet on Dry is when your paper is dry, load your brush with paint, and onto the paper you go! This technique allows for more control of where the paint goes as there is less water to move the paint onto unintended areas. You can also see the colour is much more concentrated. It’s a great technique to use when you need to create finer detail. 🖌️Dry on Dry is when your paper is dry and your brush is loaded with paint but you have dabbed the majority of the water onto tissue. So now you have drier colour on your brush w Wet Tissue Paper Art, Wet On Wet Painting, Quick Art, Tissue Paper Art, Painting Demo, Pigment Coloring, What To Use, Watercolor Sketch, Watercolour Tutorials
