Learning and Teaching With Preschoolers: Wreaking Ball Fun Ball Study Dramatic Play, Constructive Play, Construction Theme Preschool, Preschool Construction, Construction Unit, Blocks Preschool, Block Center, Child Prodigy, Block Area

The children have been asking to knock over their block structures in different ways. They have pushed, kicked, and rolled balls into the structures to knock them down, but they wanted to know how do builder people (construction workers) knock over building. This lead to a discussion on wreaking balls. I then went home and raided my husband garage for scrap PVC pipe and fittings to create a frame for the children to experiment with wreaking balls. For the first attempt the children decided…

We set up a wrecking ball in the block area, and let the children experiment with it. The wrecking ball was basically a ball and rope suspended from a dow rod. First, the children built structures from blocks and containers. Next, they used the wrecking ball to knock down their container. The children had to figure out where to hit the structures in order to know how to best knock them down.
