the one super easy thing watcher could have done to gain goodwill with their Patreon at least is to just give everyone who signed up before the announcement free watcher TV for the duration that they had subbed to Patreon. So if you subbed for a year of Patreon before the announcement you’d get a free year of watcher TV, if you’d subbed monthly you’d get one month, non-renewable. You know?
I’m sure there are some racist people in the watcher discourses but to be honest there’s a much simpler and and stronger explanation for people blaming Steven and that’s that the “famous duo”, the “ghoul boys,” people are so attached to, is Ryan and Shane. Like that’s who most people followed from BuzzFeed to Watcher, so they will naturally be more attached and defensive of them. It’s just denial. As for the specific response to Shane, well, he simply was the one who was constantly saying to steal from people and eat the rich. Ryan and Steven just didn’t do that as much. Plus people are now starting to turn on Shane even MORE than the other two from what I can see because they feel disappointed in him, so it’s not like people are altogether giving him a pass and only going after the people of color involved. Believe me, I get that white people and specifically men tend to be babied on here, but every piece of supposed evidence of mass racism in the response I’ve seen has kind of required people to just ignore the other factors in the way these three people have presented themselves and been received so far. It just seems like such a weak analysis to say “The guy less people in the fandom care about, who has a show doing rich people things, who said the infamous ‘everyone can afford it’” line, and who also is the CEO, is getting more flack than the two more popular ones who people are emotionally attached to and one of whom constantly encourages theft including in this very video? Must be racism!“ Like it’s just the most surface level analysis possible lol
i do think the fact that shane is dressed like a supervillain in the announcement is really funny. when he betrays his audience he goes all out at least.
People are starting to calculate just how much money Watcher might make with this new plan. I’m no expert, but here’s my shot at it.
Their announcement currently has 1.7 million views, so we can use that, rather than the 3mil subscribers, as our starting number.
There’s around 36k likes and 200k dislikes, which means around 20 percent of people who interacted with the like button liked the video as opposed to disliking it. We can project this onto the view count and say that of the 1.7 million who watched, 340k received the video positively and therefore would consider subscribing to Watcher TV.
Assuming a generous conversion rate of 1-5% between positive reception and subscriptions, that’s between 3.4k and 17k subscriptions at 6 dollars each, or between 20.4k a month (which would be disastrously low since we can assume that’s how much they made per single ad read based on the Charlie video) and 102k dollars a month (basically a second Patreon for them.) I don’t know how the latter would compare to their typical YouTube income considering ads etc.
Another thing to consider of course is that any future merch or live shows are going to do significantly worse.
hello i’m so absolutely sorry to post this but i need financial help. there are a few unforseen expenses that i had to pay out of my savings, on top of our monthly expenses (groceries + transpo + bills). my total money has now dwindled to Php5,700 (or $102 when converted) which won’t be enough to survive until next week. even if i get paid on the 30th it’ll have to go to the annual car insurance payment due on the first week of december, which will be barely enough. so yeah. really embarrassed to do this but if anyone could help in any way, it would be much, much appreciated. payp*l
