1. How do I submit a quote? How do I submit anonymously?
Use the submit box! Quotes sent via ask or fanmail will be automatically deleted.
To get to the submit box on desktop or mobile web, click the “What do your players say? (Submit a quote!)” link in the right-hand sidebar, under our Ko-fi button.
To submit via the app, open our blog, tap the message icon in the top right, and tap “Submit a quote!” in the list that pops up at the bottom of the app.To submit anonymously, use a desktop or mobile browser to open the submit box without signing in to Tumblr. The form asks you for an email address, but your email is not displayed when your submission is posted. Your email is only used to send you a notification when your submission gets posted, so feel free to use a fake one if you’d prefer.
2. Do you accept quotes from games other than D&D?
Absolutely! We accept all kinds of quotes as long as they’re related to tabletop roleplaying games somehow. The mods tend to use D&D terminology because that’s what we’re most familiar with, but we love seeing all the different game systems out there!
3. Can I submit a story, or something else that isn’t a quote?
Nope! We are “Shit My Players Say”, and we only publish submissions which are primarily quotes. Context is allowed if desired, but if a submission isn’t primarily a quote or dialogue, we usually won’t post it.
4. What tags should I use? How do I add specialty tags like “sfw roll: nat 1”?
The submit box offers a list of tags you can add to your submission. On desktop, you need to check each one; on mobile, Tumblr adds them all by default so please remove the ones that aren’t applicable. When you submit, pick the tags you have the context for (game system, multipart or not, etc).
Specialty tags then get added by the mods when we queue up a submission. If you don’t see specialty tags on your posted submissions, it’s either because Tumblr ate them (which happens sometimes), or we didn’t think any specialty tags applied. For example, not all quotes that involve a monk get tagged #monk ki ing around - only quotes where the focus is on monk-specific shenanigans. This is to reduce tag clutter, since the nature of tabletop groups means that multiple classes often show up in a single submission, regardless of the actual focus of the quote.
If you think a specialty tag should be applied to your submission and wasn’t, please send us an ask with a link to the post and the tag(s) you think should be added, and we’ll see what we can do!
5. What’s the “shareable” tag for? / Can I use a quote for a project or personal work?
Submissions which are tagged “shareable” may, with proper credit!, be shared outside Tumblr and used for non-profit things like art, comics, podcasts, school projects, etc.
If a post does NOT have the shareable tag, we ask that you respect the submitter’s wishes and only reblog the original post within Tumblr.
6. Can I reblog your posts, or repost them elsewhere?
We very much encourage reblogging our posts using Tumblr’s reblog feature! We love seeing the comments and tags y'all add.
However, we ask that you do not repost our stuff, either on Tumblr or elsewhere, unless you keep both our blog name and the submitter’s name visible in your repost. It’s not fair to the submitter for you to steal their quote and post it like it’s your own.
7. What’s the “multipart post” tag for? How do I use it?
Use the “multipart post” tag if you’re submitting several related quotes, or if you submit multiple quotes from the same group/game. For example, if you have several quotes from the same session, you can make multiple separate submissions and tag them each with boththe “multipart post” tag anda group name or something similar so people looking for the other part(s) can find them.
If we see one without the other, we’ll still delete the lone tag, unless EITHER you’ve submitted enough already that we recognize you, OR you put a message in your submission that you’d prefer not to include a group name on your multipart posts. This is because we get a LOT of submissions tagged with everything available in the submit box, including #multipart post.
8. What’s the “official module” tag for? / How can I avoid spoilers for published adventure paths like Curse of Strahd?
The “official module” tag is for quotes which contain meaningful details about official published adventures / modules / whatever. So if your quote spoils an official module, please add the “official module” tag! And if you want to avoid spoilers, that’s the tag to blacklist.
However, it’s up to submitters to add that tag, since the mods haven’t played every official module out there and may not realize something’s a spoiler. We can’t guarantee that all posts containing spoilers for official modules will be tagged. If you see a spoilery quote that doesn’t have the tag, please send us an ask with a link to the post, and we’ll add the tag.
9. Who’s this “fallintosanity” person whose name showed up on my submission?
fallintosanity is the parent blog of Shit My Players Say. Thanks to an exciting quirk of Tumblr’s, anonymous submissions which are edited before being posted (e.g., to add a specialty tag) get credited to our parent blog instead of to “anonymous”. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything we can do about it. :(
10. Why didn’t you publish my submission?
In general, we don’t post submissions for one (or more) of the following reasons, in approximate order of likelihood:
a. It wasn’t a quote. (This includes memes!)
b. You sent it as an ask or a fanmail.
c. It wasn’t funny or didn’t make sense. Quotes which are just “roll for $thing” or “can I do $thing?” often fall under this, as do “I rolled a nat 20 and killed a thing” quotes.
d. It contained offensive, derogatory, or hateful content.
e. It had too many spelling, grammar, and/or formatting errors to be readable.
f. Tumblr ate your submission and we never saw it.
If you’re sure your submission didn’t run afoul of a-e, and it’s been more than a month since you submitted, go ahead and resubmit! If you’re worried that we’re not receiving your submissions, send us an ask off-anon to confirm we got it.
Have a question that isn’t covered here? Check out past questions in the #how to submit tag, or send us an ask!
