The Indian Army is the part of the Indian Military which operates on land. It is the largest part of the Indian Military. It was started as the British Indian Army in 1895 and later absorbed the Presidency armies. In 1947 it became the army of independent India.

In 2010, Indian Army had 1,128,000 active personnel and 960,000 personnel.[1] It has more soldiers than any other nation except China, the United States, and Russia. Majority of the Indian Army's forces are currently stationed in the northern region of Kashmir.[2]
