Simple Wikipedia Deleted artist profile

Hello, The profile of the artist Lil Xacah has been deleted. This is an erroneous deletion. Although the source and content are verified by imdb, it has been specified as an unfounded source and has been deleted. Please republish the deleted page. https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lil_Xacah

Yes, I deleted the article, because I dsidnt think the person was notable. Please note: While it is big, and looks authritative; it is generally assumed to not confer notability. --Eptalon (talk) 13:01, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I put back the RfD template, as we are discusssing the deletion. A quick glance in the 2020, and 2019 RfDs didn't reveal anything meaningful. So let's discuss, and wait the rest of the week. --Eptalon (talk) 01:47, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Eptalon! I was wondering if you had any feedback for my AOC GA nomination? I don't want it to go stale and I'm fully ready to fix the article pending any feedback! --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 18:55, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks - if you want to revert the bolding back to how it was before I flipped them around, please do. There are a few more examples in my contributions list that have the Latin name rather than the English name as the title. I will carry on doing these in the same way in case it helps alert you to which ones have Latin names rather than English names as the titles. Bobo. 11:47, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, don't worry. It's a weird thing that there is inconsistency. WP:COMMONNAME seems to make the most sense. Of course the other problem is when they have eighteen thousand alternate names... Bobo. 13:26, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Go to a good fish restaurant, order a sardine, and see what you get...--Eptalon (talk) 13:43, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good - it's easy for me to get mixed up between, for example, forest dormouse and forest dormice. I'll try to keep an eye on the right thing - I'll make sure I mention it in my edit summary.
Can't I just stick with Latin and order "sardinus maximus"? All the best. Bobo. 17:20, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Changing titles

Yes, from here on in I will remember to change the page titles as I go through them - I was waiting for you to give me the okay to do that - I didn't want to do it without you okaying my doing it first. You're more experienced in this area than me! Bobo. 01:07, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I was just thinking about Pinus pinaster (the common pine tree that grows in the Mediterranean, and pretty much the more souther parts of Europe); it's what I commonlx associate with a pine, but I am regularly on holiday in SouthWest France where there's probably the largest such forest in the world. Note that it was planted by Napoleon III; the land there was pretty swampy beforehand. Anyway, just rambling.--Eptalon (talk) 01:11, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I'll be back when I've finished this list. Bobo. 01:16, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Haven't moved Pterocarpus indicus - doesn't make it obvious which is the most common "common name". Bobo. 01:38, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Picxk one, they are probably all common; if you are on Papua, then they likely wont call it Andaman redwood. Again: be bold, pick one, move with redirect. As I said: if unsure you use the binominal name to search, and as its redirected, they'll find whatevr you redirect it to. --Eptalon (talk) 01:44, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Newbie

Thanks for the helpful thusfar - is there a tool on Simple. that scans an article and highlights any words not on a basic wordlist, proposing alternatives and such? I'm actually finding it quite difficult to write this, lol HaltlosePersonalityDisorder (talk) 19:45, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I am not a fan of word lists. I think the essence of SEWP is different: Try to make simple sentences that are easy to understand, and explain well. And look at the links I posted on your talk page. All I can point ot is articles such as Color blindness or Evolution, to see examples of the best we have. It will take time and also some training to get into it. So: thank you for your contributions, and keep up the good work you do. --Eptalon (talk) 19:58, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And it's equally intended to be for children, for people for whom English is not a primary language, and for those with simpler vocabularies simultaneously? I just ask because I noticed while linking BDSM from Haltlose personality disorder that it has a rather sexually explicit image with prominent genitals, etc...which seemed odd when I'm trying to write in child-like terms on SEWP. Also is there a tool that will "import" the references that are currently labelled as undefined, from en. if I point it there? Think I'm finally done, lol. HaltlosePersonalityDisorder (talk) 20:17, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) @HaltlosePersonalityDisorder: Simple English Wikipedia is for anyone whose English is not advanced. That includes children, but it's important to know that Wikipedia is not censored. It is the responsibility of a child's parent or guardian to control what media the child consumes. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:42, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@HaltlosePersonalityDisorder: Please note that we live in an age where all kinds of different information is readily available. With only a little effort you'll find images/videos of naked people, or of almost any kind of sexual practice that you can imagine. Also, cultural values vary around the world. A well-chosen image can be used to illustrate a concept. Looking at BDSM, what would you expect to find? - It's bondage, and submission, so: naked men/women, with a collar, or other kind of restraint. Look at what other Wikipedias have, and you'll find the images are similar. So where exactly is the problem?--Eptalon (talk) 09:29, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Main image on en. is just a headshot with a collar, same with German, Arabic is just a flag, Bulgarian is a distant shot wearing pants, Spanish is just a head, Indonesian just a head, Romanian just a head....only SEWP thinks it should be a giant penis. None of them have an image so explicit, muchless as their main image, muchless so large, all of which is sidestepping the fact that SEWP has more focus on children as a target demographic than other WPs (for example having a specific editing policy on "For children" included in the welcome text you put on my talkpage, etc HaltlosePersonalityDisorder (talk) 21:54, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
German-language Wikipedia (we would probably call that article a good article) also has explicit images, for example a woman with a spreader bar, or a man in rope bondage. - You can't search for some terminology that is inherently sexual in nature, and then expect to not find content that isn't sexualized. Look at Nudity: It contains several images of naked people (or groups of naked people), but none of the pictures has sexual connotations. So, I really don't see where the problem is.--Eptalon (talk) 09:30, 25 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Revert

In my view, we shouldn't be allowing users to add Nazi theories about Holocaust denial to a talk page, and I don't see the age of the discussion as relevant to that. Racist beliefs are incompatible with Wikipedia and are not welcomed. --IWI (talk) 19:33, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In what way is that 5 year old discussion revisionist? - Is odubting something revisionist? Talk pages are there for such arguments. Note that most killings were done with en:Zyklon B, which is based on cyanide. The Nazis produced three nerve agents, Tabun, Sarin, and Soman. To my knolwedge, they never used them. It is possible, that some were tested, also in the concentration camps. Sorry: I really don't see what the harm of the statement is. Thats why I undid your removal (and the collapsible border). --Eptalon (talk) 19:49, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't see the harm in Holocaust denial, then I don't even know how to respond. --IWI (talk) 20:05, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(change conflict)  Wow. Just wow. Someone else removed that denialist nonsense (which was better than my collapsing it) and you restored it?
To my knolwedge, they never used them [poison gas].
This is the worst form of denialist nonsense. If you are you trying to get yourself globally banned from all Wikimedia projects, insistence on including this sort of thing may be as good a way as any to accomplish that. I've collapsed the section again, and I encourage anyone who wants to delete it again, to do so. As a friendly piece of advice, I advise you just to lurk and observe, and not to restore it again. Mathglot (talk) 20:07, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it isn't. I simply stated that to my knowledge, there are no documented cases, where the nazis used Tabun, Soman or Sarin, in a combat situation. Can you point to a documented case? --Eptalon (talk) 20:20, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And no, I am not talking abvout the use of Zyklon B, in concentration/extetmination camps. That's well documented. --Eptalon (talk) 20:21, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────┘
Eptalon: I'm requesting that you be crystal clear now about your beliefs concerning the use of poison gas and extermination camps, because I am already at simple ANI and in Preview mode, composing a message requesting that you be de-sysopped (as well as de-cratted, and de-everything else). I will hold off before finishing my message (I still need to create some diffs), but I need the clearest possible statement from you. If I have misunderstood, then I apologize; but if there's any waffling in your response or skating the edge about this topic, I will finish the message and publish it. Just so you know that I don't take this lightly, nor do I have an itchy trigger finger: I've been here 14 years, and have never even come close to requesting anybody be desysopped before, so this would be a first for me. Let's hope I am misunderstanding you, but now is the time to be really, really clear. Adding IWI. Mathglot (talk) 20:43, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mathglot, let me be clear: I wasn't alive at the time of the Second World War, I am not a historian either, so I need to rely on historians: They say that poison gas was used at these camps, and it was also used to kill people; I have no means to verify this information, other than the reports of different historians. This is however not the point I was trying to make: The discussion we are talking about is several years old. Yes, the topic is controversial, but there is no urgent need to remove the discussion. My discussion, also from above was that to my knolwedge the nazis didn't use the agents Tabun, Soman, or Sarin in combat situations. The use of Zyklon B (+other substances) in conentration camps, and the nazis killing people for example in the context of de:Aktion T4 are historically well-documented and not controversial. So, please provide documentation for the Nazi use of Tabun, Soman, and Sarin, in combat situations. --Eptalon (talk) 21:10, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As to the discussion itself: comment (+user doubting these killings) in 2014, reply by another user, in 2016. Collapsible infobox/title is a more recent addition. --Eptalon (talk) 21:31, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is not about me, or my providing documentation for T, S, or S, in combat situations, or otherwise. I don't doubt that you have doubts about the use of those three chemicals, and that's an appropriate topic for the talk page. This is your user page, and it's about your behavior at the article (and here as well). We haven't interacted before, and I didn't know whether you were alive and politically aware during WW2 (few are; those who were 15 at the end of the war are now 90) but that doesn't matter. What's shocking to me, is that you appear either to be unaware that millions were exterminated in German death camps by use of poison gas, or you are unaware how incredibly tone-deaf it appears to other users to restore Talk page statements, such as this:

"Poison Gas ??? Oh Really? The Nazis killed millions of these people at the concentration camps with poison gas.

True The Nazis murdered millions of these people at the concentration camps with with industrial machine efficiency. But with poison gas? Even Schindler's List only showed that as a rumor. Remember that remarkable scene? Perhaps Steven Spielberg is a Holocaust Denier? Or poor researcher? Sorry, that popular powerful tale needs evidence.

as you did here, with the Edit summary, "Last known good version, there's on reason to remove a 5 year old discussion". "Good version"? How about considering this principle, when considering restoring it: there's no reason to restore 5 year old pro-Nazi conspiracy theories by an IP user. And after you restored it, it was still hidden by the collapse bar I previously added, so you doubled down, and uncollapsed it (with ES: no reason to hide a 5 year old discussion) in this edit. Wtf?
Are you really unaware of how this looks to onlookers? You appear to either be denying or finessing the question by use of words like "to my knowledge" and so forth). Were you a newbie user, or at least one not used to editing or commenting on Holocaust-related topics, I would just explain things patiently to you, perhaps with a warning to avoid disruption in this controversial area, carefully watched by many editors. But since you are German (or at least, German-speaking native, not sure how things are in Aut, CH-de, and so on) I'm well aware of how profoundly (and admirably, far better than the French, say) the events of WW2 and the Holocaust are taught to German children; so it beggars belief that you are not aware of this. But more important by far, is that you have your fifteen-year badge, and the triple mop of admin, CU, and crat; that's about as far from clueless newbie American high school student who couldn't pick out Germany on a map, as you can possibly get.
This is really troubling to me. I'm stunned, both by your original edits at Talk:Nazism, and here since. I just don't know what to make of it. Maybe I'm missing something; I'm far less used to "simple" than en-wiki. Mathglot (talk) 22:46, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think right at the moment, you are overreacting over two stale statements from 2014 and 2016, one by an IP editor, the other by a named editor, which have since been removed. Remember, Wikpedia isn't censored; evryone is entitled to their opinion. Yes, I am aware of history. I invite you to stop your personal attacks on me, and I expect an apology. As to the issue I will move on. I am here to bulid an encyclopedia, and I invite you do the same. --Eptalon (talk) 23:48, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Editors can leave their votes on the RfdA page, and the outcome will be decided at the end, based on the votes and comments they leave. I left a statement on the page, telling people how I see the situation. Trying to influence people to vote one way or another is against the good tone. Hello Angela, as you probably know I am not a native English speaker. From what I see, I'd say 'flop' is common, when people talk about movies or media, or perhaps even perfoming arts (like plays in a theatre). When I look at the alternatives (searching for synonyms), the only thing I see that could probably pass as simple would be 'failure'. That has the problem that its not specific enough. Personally, I'd suggest you continue to use 'flop'. But get a second opinion of a native speaker. --Eptalon (talk) 00:31, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) @Tropical Storm Angela: Native speaker here. When used in the context of how successful something is, flop is slang or jargon, neither of which is a simple use of language. (Entertainment reporting in particular is full of jargon.) You can see that meaning marked as informal in Wiktionary. Also, the main meaning of flop is to fall heavily, so the word has multiple meanings. When reasonably possible, it's good to avoid words that have multiple meanings, especially if the way you want to use it isn't the primary meaning. Instead of saying something like "the movie flopped at the box office," I would say something like "the movie didn't make much money." Even saying something like "the movie didn't do well at the box office" can confuse people who are learning English because that use of box office is figurative. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:16, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Flop is slangy when used idiomatically. Idiomatic uses are not simple, because if a foreign language reader is unfamiliar with street language they will not understand the term. Modern dictionaries do include idiomatic uses, but it seems many people do not use them or have them. On the other hand, idiomatic uses grow with use, and in some cultures become almost normal. It's interesting that the French language is officially governed by the Académie Française with the objective of controlling language change, especially invasions of English slangy terms! Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:16, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note however, the Académie Française is only repsonsible for France; there are regional variations; I know of Belgium, and Switzerland, which do not recognise some of the rulings. Don't know about Luxembourg, though.--Eptalon (talk) 01:23, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suspicious

Hey I would like something checked out please. It’s a major red flag to me.

In https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion/Requests/2021/Amber_Martinez#Discussion (sorrry I’m on mobile) the IPV6 user stated they have a different ip than they other keep vote. Looking at the edit history of both they don’t add up. The creator has had pages deleted, the ip users only edits are to the rfd. Seem suspicious to you? PotsdamLamb (talk) 22:04, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @PotsdamLamb: IPs don't really count in RfDs anyway —Belwine (talk) 22:18, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Belwine: Not fully true they just have less weight unless they can actually prove. The problem I have is the ip users statement considering the other keep was by a named user. That’s why the “note we have different ips” triggered a flag with me. They are either editing while logged out or the other thing when they try to throw off a vote by acting as a different person. PotsdamLamb (talk) 23:27, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Whoever closes the RfD, will look at the arguments, and take a decision based on those. In the case of the current Rfd: I copied the first keep over from the article talk page. I just added the unsigned template to the comment you are probably referring to. --Eptalon (talk) 23:55, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Let me also add that especially in RfDs, users (named/unnamed) voting multiple times is quite common, and whoever closes the RfD will deal with it. --Eptalon (talk) 22:09, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think we have any agreement to use common names over scientific names in biology generally, especially as we have so many users from non-anglophone countries. If we do, I'm not part of that consensus in any way. I notice you have recognised the problem indirectly when you offer an alternative name. The whole issue of naming was bedevilled by alternative names in different countries. It was always in doubt as to whether or not they referred to the same animal (or plant).

The one great advantage of the Linnean names is that they are exact, agreed and international. Many times the common names are not exact and almost universally they are not international. Have you any idea of how many whte-ish butterflies there are? Well, there are hundreds, and not all are in this genus. I don't mind at all using "Elephant" or "lion", but it's really not a good idea to teach readers to prefer common names generally.

Macdonald-ross (talk) 14:39, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment; I have moved it back to its Linnean name. The commno English name now redirects there. --Eptalon (talk) 15:01, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Common names vs scientific names

Re birdies, you might ask, why not apply the same concept to little tree frogs. They are mostly newly discovered and their so-called "common names" are just invented, and therefore silly to the point of being ridiculous. The answer is that if it keeps the user happy to create hundreds of new pages, who am I to interfere? It remains true that the use of common names is long-term not consistent with zoological nomenclature, and a phoney way to make scientific communication palatable to the general public. Understanding the importance of Linnaeus requires an appreciation of the troubles biology got into with common names two hundred plus years ago. Also, David Attenborough and the BBC do not help! Many of the so-called "common names" he uses have never actually been used by anyone but him, I'll bet. Macdonald-ross (talk) 14:50, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You go to the supermarket, get a can/tin with fish inside; likely you'll find both herring and sardine. You go to the restaurant, and you'll find sardine on the menu (esp. around the mediterranean. Likely the sardine from the supermarket, and that from the restaurant are not the same species of fish. With herring, the situation is likely similar. And yes, there was this whitish butterfly found in cabbage fields, which turned out to be a cabbage white. I had asome biology at school, and I think I understand the problem. We do however have English learners here (and people whose mother tongue isn't english). Animal and plant names are among the vocabulary that's most difficult to learn (because its different in every langage). So, when our favorite edito searches for sardine, we had better make sure there's a page, at least for the more common animals and plants. As an illustration, the European tree frog is called Laubfrosch in German - 'Laub' -> foliage (as in: the leaves of trees), -frosch -> frog. --Eptalon (talk) 18:04, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to this project. One easy way is to use the search box, and search for the article name that you want to create. You'll then either find an article with that name, or you'll have the option: "Create the page ... on this Wiki", where "..." is the term you search for. You then click on that term (which is in red) and are able to create the article. --Eptalon (talk) 14:52, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In very short terms: When storing a password, you add a random number or string before calculating a hash value. What you store in the password database is the hash value. You also have the "random number or string" stored somewhere. So when the user enters the password, you again enter the random string you have from somewhere, calculate the hash and copmare to what's in the password db (the hash of the password + string), but not the password alone. By definition, a hash function must give the same output, when fed the same string twice. So, when you compare the hash values and they are different, you know that the password + string was different (and the password is wrong). i know thats not what is meant by "salting" in Wikipedia, what I explained was the salting in cryptography. --Eptalon (talk) 21:25, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Verdis Deletion

Hello,

I'd like to ask, in what way was Verdis considered a fake / hoax? If you look at the deletion log of the media file, the deletion was only proposed and backed by one person (The Banner). That person's talk page on commons is shown to have aggression and even admins have suggested not to talk to him.

Sure verdis was founded by a then 14 year old kid but so we're many other Micronations on Wikipedia such as Austenasia. That shouldn't make it a hoax. It has reached enough notability on WRAL, RTL, TELEX and more.

Micronations are not always serious, for example Molossia. This does not mean they should be deleted.

Could this please he reviewed and the page restored? The the entire process has been powered by one user named the banner who has placed a deletion request everywhere. He clearly has a disliking for this Verdis project, but he is shown to be aggressive on Wikipedia.

I apologise if this is a lot to read. Looking forward to your response. I am happy to assist with this investigation. I believe that if the page is still declared controversial, it should at least be restored with a discussion for deletion. BrodieMan201 (talk) 05:49, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have to say, atm it looks workable, and it looks like with a joint effort, we can get it to GA. Not like Esperanto, which was probably written by an Esperantist, who left here in 2019. What do you think about Bird, is that promotable yet?--Eptalon (talk) 09:59, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well about Bird. Yes, but I have changed the order in the intro. The intro has got rather long in relation to the article, but that is because it now has to be clear about dinos right at the start. That is why I have had a bit of trouble with the sequence of sentences. You might read the intro to see what you think. Overall, I've done the things I set our to do, so if you feel it is OK then put it up as a GA. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:45, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Second thoughts: I'd better continue adding sources for the next few days. It really didn't have enough! I was quite shocked to see how few we had. Macdonald-ross (talk) 15:36, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eptalon, I requested QD on multiple talk pages e.g. Talk:Tenualosa ilisha or the ones named above because they only consisted of the {{talk page}} template, which should not be placed to every talk page. Is there a reason, why you kept Talk:Nanda Devi, Talk:Bengali cuisine and Talk:Tor putitora, but deleted all other pages tagged by me for the same reason? –Morneo06 (talk) 21:04, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

After deleting 70-90 pages (don't ask) of that same author, no there's no particular reason. There are cases where the main page actully exists and is not a redirect somewhere else (A talk page on a redirect page is mostly pointless). Doesn't make much difference to me, I can delete them as well. They are just a tp header...--Eptalon (talk) 21:11, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It would probably make sense to also delete them, but since they are only talk page templates that isn't that important. –Morneo06 (talk) 21:23, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have deleted the ones with {{tl|talk page}}, but I think the ones created with the actual talk header are harmless to keep. We just need to try to prevent that editor from doing that again. --Ferien (talk) 21:25, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Croeso-Welsh welcome

Hello! I saw a word "Croeso, Haoreima", Welsh term for "Welcome " instead of welcome (English word) in the main page of this very Wikipedia, in the mobile version but not in desktop version. It's very surprising indeed. In the desktop version, I saw "Welcome to Wikipedia". Could you please check it? Haoreima (talk) 16:43, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Quick deletion of Polygyny

The page you wrote, Polygyny, has been selected for quick deletion. If you think this page should be kept, please add {{wait}} below the line {{QD}} and say why on the talk page. If the page is already gone, but you think this was an error, you can ask for it to be undeleted. You can find more information about the reason here. Bird

OK, for better or worse, I've finished with Bird.

In passing I see that polygyny and polyandry have been redirected to polygamy. This is an error IMO, because in humans polygamy means only one thing, where in animals generally it makes sense to have the more specific terms. By redirecting we lose this distinction. En wiki has pages for the separate terms, but to my surprise they have content for humans only. So apparently I have to shut up about this! But... I see a page En:Mating system on En wiki which covers the use in animals and humans...
