What do you call this? 🧈 No matter what it’s called, it’s meant to keep butter nice and spreadable on the counter without going rancid. Once the butter is room temperature, you can put it into the lid. Then add water to the base which acts as a seal once the lid is in place so that air cannot directly access the butter. You can leave it on your counter without worry! On August 21st I’ll be giving a virtual workshop all about making butter dishes from slabs of clay and texture templates. While it will focus on the traditional butter dish, I’ll also discuss this French butter keeper design. Sign up through the link tree in my bio. This week's find is a very utilitarian, antique pot/crock used to store butter (with out the need for refrigeration :) French Butter Keeper (or) Butter Bell source Before refrigerators came into being, butter was kept in earthenware pots, and sometimes submerged in water. I keep bumping into antique and modern versions of the Butter crocks/pots. The original water submerged butter crock /bell is said to have originated in France in the Middle Ages. (5th to 15th century) source There are two…
