Neue Galerie New York on Instagram: "Curator Christian Bauer views this small painting of sunflowers as Egon Schiele’s first major work. From 1908 on Schiele had many sunflowers in his paintings and with the present work, Schiele opens a new chapter. This is a group portrait of plants instead of portraits of human beings. This work shows a sunflower family—an old, wilted mother with three young strong flowers. The theme of a mother with children became a recurring subject in Schiele’s work—as if, through his art, he was trying to understand his difficult relationship with his own mother. He believed that he was brilliant and complex, and she was simple and intellectually inferior. Though he loved her, their relationship was never easy.
