Landscape bubble diagram

A designer can use the Landscaping bubble diagram to work with general areas and shapes. Make use of the extra blank copies from the site analysis to sketch out various layouts and ideas. It is acceptable at this point to be unaware of specifics and details. Bubbles define spaces. They provide a quick glimpse of how a proposed layout appears and feels. Once a good general concept has been achieved, spaces and locations will be fine-tuned, and features may be added or removed.

This is a copy of the presentation that I gave at the Leawood Garden Club 2 weeks ago. I cover the process for planning a garden of any scale. My hope is to help those do-it-yourselfers who want to have a well planned garden.

For those that struggle with how to start their landscape design this process is amazing. The idea is to arrange your spaces conceptually with bubbles, move those bubbles towards strong shapes, then finally place plant materials to reinforce your outdoor rooms.

This bubble diagram depicts my proposed hatchery space. I used hierarchy to show the performance space as the most important space. The diagram also helps to show adjacency, or a loose floorplan, with the gallery store at the entrance followed by the performance space, then a long hallway on the right side leading to the studio, consultation room and the bathrooms. The smaller bubbles stemming off from the main spaces depict the important components that each space requires.
