This homeschool art lesson teaches you about Dutch modern abstract artist Piet Mondrian and includes a simple kids art activity that's perfect for all ages!

First students identified and labeled a 12 part color wheel using crayons. Then they painted the primary, secondary and intermediate colors onto a larger color wheel paper which they divided into 12 equal parts using a ruler. After their papers dried, students cut out a large white circle for the sclera, their color wheel for the iris, and a small black circle for the pupil. Then “skin” was glued on top with the addition of black eyelashes.

Color wheel art theory. As a first grade art project we went over the basics of primary and secondary colors and how primary colors make up all the other colors, but no colora can make up primary colors! Then we filled in our very own colors wheels, and made them turtles! We gave them and place to swim, and glued them to black construction paper for our first art project of the year!
