Bacon was a philosopher and friar that wrote the first known scientific explanation of the mechanics of flight around 1250-70 CE. In his book Secrets of Art and Nature he describes many physics phenomenons including flight. This book also showcases the description of an ornithopter, a machine designed to fly like a bird (flapping wings). His works are impactful to the history of aviation because of the effect it had later on, in developing a technical understanding of flight mechanics. English natural philosopher. Translated many Arabic and Greek works on astronomy, astrology, philosophy, alchemy, and maths into Latin. Early introducer of Arabic numerals to Europe. An Anglo-Saxon, making him subordinate in the newly Norman England.
