As of this date, more than 222 million cases are reported with more than 4.60 million fatalities. Nepal has more than 771,000 cases reported with almost 11,000 death recorded to date. Though most of the patients present with flu-like symptoms, people with comorbidities like Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, lung, and heart disease most likely suffer from severe disease and even death. As reported, neurological manifestations are common in critically ill patients. The most common manifestation of CNS is headache, dizziness, and encephalopathy whereas loss of smell and taste is the common PNS manifestation. Other neurological complications seen are fatigue, myalgias, hemorrhage, altered consciousness, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, syncope, seizure, and stroke. Non-specific neurological symptoms may be present in the early stages which can mislead the treatment. In some cases, neurological manifes...

Shunt obstruction and infection are the most common complications following shunt surgery whereas VP shunt-associated pseudocyst formation is a rare complication. These are the cystic space without the epithelial lining, filled with fluid around the distal tip of the catheter. In this case report, we present you a 47-year-old male who underwent VP shunt placed a year back presented with huge abdominal swelling, headache, and weight loss. CT scan of the abdomen showed abdominal pseudocyst with the peritoneal end of the shunt within the cyst. Though the exact mechanism is not known, abdominal adhesion, multiple revisions, obstruction, or dislodgement are thought to predispose to the formation of a pseudocyst.

Conservation and management planning of wetlands requires, among others, a comprehensive floristic account. In this study, we prepared a checklist of the flowering plants found in the wetlands of the Lake Cluster of Pokhara Valley (LCPV), a Ramsar site of Nepal, located in a rapidly urbanizing capital city of Gandaki Province in Central Nepal. Voucher specimens were collected from the study sites through multiple visits during the monsoon (June-August) and autumn (September-November) seasons. Species were categorized based on their life forms (Raunkiaer’s classification) and native distribution range (native, naturalized, invasive). Ethno-botanical uses of the plant species were compiled from the published literature. We identified 230 plant species belonging to 70 families and 177 genera. Asteraceae (25 species), ...

Methods: A total of 351 urine samples were processed during the study. The urine samples were cultured onto the MacConkey agar and Blood agar plates by the semi-quantitative culture technique using a standard calibrated loop have an internal diameter of 3 mm. Results: Altogether 351 urine samples were processed during the study. From this study, the prevalence of UTI in the patient visiting Koshi Zonal Hospital was found to be 24.30%. From the urine sample of 351, a total of 82 showed significant growth. The considerable isolate was E. coli i.e. 63 (76.83%). The prevalence of UTI was comparatively found higher in female patients than in male patients. E. coli was found highly susceptible to Gentamycin (61.55%) and least from Ampicillin (1.60%) and Nalidixic acid ...

Amongst the new discoveries are the genus Machaerina, alongside species: Eleocharis ochrostachys, Fimbristylis acuminata, F. ferruginea, F. nutans, F. thomsonii and Scleria rugosa. The taxonomy and distribution of Actinoscirpus grossus, Fimbristylis salbundia and Fuirena umbellata in Nepal are clarified through notes on nomenclature, description, distribution, specimen examination, identification keys and photographs.

Spine is the second most common site of metastasis and is also an indicator of poor prognosis. There is a significant dilemma for brain and spine surgeons about when to undergo aggressive surgical treatment, such as en-bloc resection of oligo-spine metastasis compared to conventional tumor excision by curettage. Here, we report a case of 60-year old female, a diagnosed case of renal cell carcinoma who had undergone right sided nephrectomy (with adrenalectomy) 5 years ago. She presented with history of pain over upper back. MRI revealed metastatic lesion over the thoracic T-7 vertebra. She underwent en-block total vertebral resection and reconstruction with titanium cage and pedicle screw fixation of the T-7 vertebra which healed with good results.

The area is dominated by the Kirat indigenous community. The present study was conducted to document the knowledge of the ethnomedicinal uses and practices that exist in the area before the associated socio-cultural knowledge on biological diversity is lost. Methods: Ethnomedicinal data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires. Stakeholders meetings were organized for assessing the conservation issues in the sub-corridor. The importance of medicinal plant species was assessed using quantitative indices such as informant consensus factor, relative frequency of citation, relative importance, fidelity level and Rahman’s similarity index. Results: Altogether, 140 medicinal plant species from 68 families and 127 genera were reported, which were used to treat 12 health disorders categories. The dominant families were Asteraceae and Fabaceae whic...

Percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy (PDT) has achieved wide acceptance recently since its first introduction by Ciagila in 1985. Aims and Objective: The current study was designed and aimed to compare conventional tracheostomy (CT) with percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy using Grigg’s GWDF technique in terms of operative timing, duration of ICU and hospital stay and complications. Materials and Methods: A prospective, single blinded, randomized study was done in between April 2019 to December 2019. Patients were randomly assigned into CT group and PDT group of 32 patients in each group. Data were recorded in terms of demographics, preoperative diagnosis, GCS, comorbidities, ICU stay, hospital stay, decanulation time, operative time and various complications. Data were compared using student’s t test for continuous variables and Chi-squared test or Fisher’s exact test for categorical variable...

Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy and almost 80% of people with epilepsy live in low and middle-income countries. Most of these people do not get the necessary treatment they need. The main objective of this study is to study the demographic profile of patients, etiology of epilepsy and prescribing pattern, drug compliance, and its outcome in terms of epilepsy control in patients. Materials and methods: A retrospective analytical study was conducted from January 2018 to December 2018 including 120 consecutive patients admitted with epilepsy with an objective to study various clinico-socio-demographical features of epilepsy and various features associated with outcome. The outcome was categorized into a good outcome group and poor outcome group according to absence or decrease in seizure frequency in 6 months duration in comparison to the pre-treatment status. All the cont...

Specially, indigenous people depend on MP species for their basic livelihood. In this study, we aimed to document MP species and assess their indigenous use among Magar (Kham) community in Western Nepal. Methods: A list of MP species was prepared through empirical ethnobotanical study and their indigenous use was assessed using a set of questionnaires. The data collected was generalized for MP species diversity, use categories, and life forms. Informant consensus factor (Fic), Use Frequency (UF) and Use Value (UV) were used to find the cultural importance of MP species. Results: We recorded 82 MP species, belonging to 45 families and 75 genera of which nine species cited in Magar (Kham) community are ethnobotanically new to Nepal. Informant consensus factor value was found to be high (1) for eight ailment categories; cancer, warts, pneumonia, dandruff, frightening, anesthetic,...
