Cover art for the web novel Tales from Aurea. The title features a sword as the T in Tales and two dragons forming an infinity symbol in the background. Five characters stand ready to fight under a solar eclipse. From left to right: Leif, a man with a battle axe and cocky expression; Jo, a muscular woman with a mischievous grin; Kaja, a small, nervous girl with dragon horns and a tail; Sakrattars, an elf wizard with a spell book and a toad on his head; Amale, an anthropomorphic painted dog holding a bow.ALT

Tales from Aurea is a long-running web novel based on a homebrew Pathfinder campaign. It features a cast of queer characters, a premise steeped in eastern European mythology, and a world modeled on the fall of the Roman Empire.

Synopsis:

The Aurean Empire, once the dominating force at the heart of Calthia, is crumbling. Those who have been waiting for their chance at greatness will seize power at any cost. As political chaos erupts across the continent, four unlikely companions come together with a humble goal: helping a mysterious young girl named Kaja find her way home.

But when it comes to light that Kaja’s lost people have the ability to turn the tide in the power struggle gripping Calthia, suddenly all eyes—friend and foe alike—are turned towards her.

The Party:

The Wizard: Sakrattars Mistwood, the fourth son in a prominent Imperial family (that he no longer speaks with), cringefail loser, in it for the fame and academic redemption, has a useless toad named Bartholomew as a familiar

The Barbarian: Jo, former elite warrior turned lone wolf, de facto leader of the group, dotes on Kaja and is highly protective of her, can shapeshift into a giant sabercat

The Sorcerer: Kaja, lost child, traumatized, has some connection to dragons, kinda ditzy, very gentle… until you threaten her friends, low-key the strongest one in the party

The Fighter: Leif Hjalmarsson, mercenary who loves wine women and song, enamored with heroism and glory but kinda sucks at fighting (maybe due to all the wine?)

The Ranger: Amale Inyoni, the party’s dog (literally), strong silent type but his wagging tail gives away his game, hates violence loves sticks

This panic happens like every few months.

idk thinking about how sometimes you have to show up for people you aren't that close to, because sometimes you're just the person who's there. sometimes you invite a new friend to a party and end up having to sit with them through a panic attack. sometimes you run into an acquaintance on their worst day and they need to talk about what happened. sometimes someone is crying in a stairwell and you're the only one around to ask if they're okay. and none of this is "trauma dumping" or whatever the fuck it's just being there for people because you're the one in the room with them.

girl who finally is going back to reading by finishing one book: now i'm going to read all the books in the world.

when u come up with a tiny change for your story that not only makes the writing flow better but also hammers in the character motivations and story theme
