When you're considering working with spirits, I highly, highly discourage seeking out the most vivid, intense experiences you can. This is for ones' own mental safety.

Not mental safety as in "ooooh you're not powerful enough yet" or "oooh you're not going to like what you see," but "hey this could easily fuck up your grasp on reality in a way that's difficult to recover from."

Naturally everyone wants to see the "hard evidence" of spirits, catching them on photo, hearing voices, receiving visions, something reaching out and touching you, etc. Everyone wants to see inanimate objects move and other "impossible" acts. But if this is the baseline for how we define spirit behavior and only strive for more and more it's going to unravel us pretty quickly.

Historically speaking, most spirit work has nothing to do with this. It mostly involves either warding/scaring them away for safety or paying your respects to them in some fashion. You might talk to the latter and and ask for guidance or help, but nothing is expected to manifest right in front of you. If we only treat these Grand Experiences as the most valid, we're skipping over a lot more meaningful work.

More importantly though, nothing is above the laws of physics. Actively seeking to break the laws of physics (moving/levitating objects, shape-shifting, physically changing dimensions or having spirits visually/physically manifest) can shred your ability to process the material world around you. You can't always find qualified research to back up what you'd like to hear, but there will always be some speculative pseudoscience ready to "prove" it for you. You can ALWAYS rationalize how something "could" happen, which becomes how it DOES happen. Once you've mastered the art it can can validate every delusion, every paranoia, every hallucination, every self-doubt, every ludicrous idea, with nothing solid to grab onto.

Mastering those leaps of logic, it's no wonder folks have zero trouble believing the earth is flat, amethyst cures cancer, vaccines cause autism, the government is secretly controlled by alien lizard people, you get it.

Let yourself draw a line of what you DON'T believe in. It's healthy.

Anonymous asked:

Do you have any spells to induce visions? Preferably without entheogens

Sure! The following is a list of Spells to Aid Visions not a list of divinatory practices.

“Fumes made of linseed, fleabane seed, roots of violets and parsley doth make you to foresee things to come and doth conduce to prophesying.”…“The stone that is bread in the apple of the eye of the civet cat, held under the tongue of man, does make him to divine or prophecy.”– From Witches’ Potions and Spells by Kathryn Paulsen

“Anoint your eyes for three days with the combined juices of the herbs, dill, vervain, and St. John’s-wort, and the spirits in the air will become visible to you.”– From Nummits and Crummits: Devonshire Customs, Characteristics, and Folk-lore by Sarah Hewett

“Dream Oracle (PGM VII. 250-254, 300 C.E.) Before going to bed speak this formula to your magical lamp:NAIENCHRE NAIENCHRE, Mother of Fire and Water, thou art the one who riseth before ARCHENTECHTHA, reveal unto me what I desire about [say what you want revealed to you]. If the answer is yes, show me a plant and water, if no, fire and iron. Ede, ede–tachy, tachy! [= Now, now–quick, quick in Greek]…Direct Vision (PGM VII. 319-334, 300 C.E.)As a preliminary preparation for this operation the ancient source says the magician should keep [themself] pure for three days.1. Perform your usual opening rite of purification.2. Take a copper vessel, pour rainwater into it, and make an offering of frankincense in your brazier on the altar.3. Now speak the formula:Let this earth be still, let the air be still, let the sea be still, let the winds also be still, and not disturb me during this, my divination– no sound, no loud cry, no whistling. For I am a prophet, and since I am about to call a terrible fearful name: KOLLA OLPHILOGEMALA ACHEROIO,open up the holy temple, which is the cosmic order, constructed over the earth–and give welcome to Osiris, for I am MANCHNOBISE CHOLCHOBE MALASET IAT THAANNOUITA KERTOMENOU PAKEROAO KRANNASIRAT MOMOMO MELASOUT PEU PHRE. Open my ears so that thou canst reveal to me what I desire about those matters I ask thee about! Come forth, come forth– Ede, ede–tachy, tachy! And speak to me concerning those things about which I questioned thee. Appear to me, lord Anubis. I command thee, for I am IEO BELPHENO, who is inquiring about this matter.4. Wait in silence for the god to speak to you within your heart and mind. If he does not speak, repeat the formula above.5. Once he has spoken, and you are satisfied with his revelation, close the rite in your usual way and dismiss the god by saying: Go away, Anubis, to thine own thrones, for the sake of my health and well-being.”– From Hermetic Magic by Stephen E. Flowers, Ph.D.

Traditional Spells That Use Honey

1) Spell to Ensure Peace Between You and Another

There are times when you simply need to get along with someone you despise, or someone who despises you. Perhaps because you could lose your job or fail a class if you do not. However, if your personalities are naturally clashing, achieving harmony is easier said than done.

So take a photograph of the two of you together, with no one else in the background. If that is not possible, find a piece of paper that contains both your handwriting and theirs — and no one else’s. Then place it inside a mason jar filled with honey.

Right before you close the lid, command the honey to sweeten your connection by whispering: Edrasum embagne egubaria.

Finally, place the jar in the freezer.

Once the honey has hardened, your relationship will have softened.

2) Spell to Discover if Someone is Being Dishonest

Acquire a small amount of raw, unfiltered honey. Around 30 ml will do. Make sure it is tightly sealed in a jar or in another container. Preferably made of glass.

Go to your sacred space, or any private place where you will be undisturbed. Dim the lights and have a gray or black candle in front of you. Take deep breaths to prepare yourself for the truth.

Then say: I call upon Pytho, Belial and Xezbeth, Princes of the Spirits of Deceit. I offer you this earthly treat if you reveal to me what I need.

Proceed by explaining your situation. “A former flame wants back in my life. Does she really love me like she says, or is that another lie?”

When the candlelight starts moving frantically, it means your answer is ready. Open the jar and inhale the scent. If the honey smells sweet, the person is sincere. If it smells rotten, the person is lying.

3) Spell to Dull the Pain of a Broken Heart

Bake yourself some sweets. Cookies. Cupcakes. Brownies. Whatever your heart desires.

Mix at least a spoonful of honey in the batter. But more is better. As you do this, say out loud: Irion khirion eser khuder.

Make sure you memorize the words. Just reading them will not work.

Then finish baking, and eat your treat. By the time you have digested your sweets, your heart’s pain will have begun to heal.

But this spell only works if the other person is the reason you are hurting. That is, if you are not the one who ruined the relationship. Because the above words are meant to bond with honey, and suck away a monster’s rabies.

Reading the Candle Flame

From: Satanic Candle Magic of the Ars Goetia by Hagatha Grimsbane

  • Candle burns clean and even: Uneventful candle burnings are generally a good sign. When a candle burns without a lot of smoke, movement, noise, or dripping, your spell work is going as planned. The results will manifest as expected
  • Tall, bright candle flame: There is a lot of energy built up behind your spell. Barriers to your success are quickly falling away. A fast, happy result is likely
  • Small, steady flame: Less energy fueling the spell. It is a good sign- though it signals a need for practice and focus. A positive result is likely with delay, keep your eye on your goal

To return a stolen item

Take an old wooden chair your household no longer uses. Break off one leg, cut it into twigs, and make a fire with them. As it burns, say:

A devil shall bring the thief back. I left [the item], and the thief took it, and if he does not bring [the item] back, the Devil shall take him to hell. Amen.

or

May the one who asks be heard. Something of mine is stolen, taken by an evil thief. If he does not return [the item] quickly, a devil shall take him!

Repeat thrice, then bring the chair and the ashes to the nearest crossroads at night.

The ritual shall cause the thief to grow restless and lose their peace until they return what they stole.

Where do our rites and methods originate? Who first spoke with the spirits catalogued in the grimoires? How did sorcerers first procure formulae like the infamous ’askei kataskei’ or ’abaxacatabax’? The answers to these questions will lead us deeper into the nourishing dark of sabbat-craft and spirit work, for it is through these gates that witches are able to connect to what has been called the true Black Book, being the source of all magical knowledge, the hidden place where the roots of witches drink deep, wresting charms directly from the otherworld.”

- A Broom At Midnight; 13 Gates of Witchcraft by Spirit Flight, Roger J Horne

I came from a VERY superstitious family so here are some strange superstitions I heard growing up:

If you have an itchy right foot, you will leave on a journey.

Cover the mirrors when someone dies so they won't get stuck.

If you bite your tongue while eating, it’s because you’ve recently told a lie.

If you see crows mourning the death of another crow then you MUST mourn with them, it's only polite and the crows will remember that kindness.

When cows raise their tails, it’ll soon start to rain so best get inside.

Always kindly greet cats and wish them a merry day/night because they hold grudges.

if a honey covered spoon is dropped it is a sign that your lover will come over.

Be careful when gifting flowers, Even numbers are for the deceased, so choose an odd number of flowers.

If your ears are red, burning, buzzing ir rimging it means someone is idly talking about you.

Beware of fleas, with each bite they suck a bit of your soul away.

If you keep a rabbit's food or chicken foot in your pocket, it will protect from evil spirits.

If a bee gets inside your house, you will soon have a guest. If you kill the bee, then the visit will be an unpleasant one and bad luck will haunt you all day so best kindly escort the bee out.

Your guardian demon is just as protective as your guardian angel so if it warns you of something then listen.

Never cross or go near the train tracks at night, unsightly and unkind things wait in such places so they can make mischievous deals.

Always have at least one cat statue in your home for protection.

If you tell the moon your worries, she'll listen and help take them away.

A ring on each finger keeps the devil's deals away.

If you keep a blue jays feather on you then you can never be caught.

Everyone with a dimple was touched by Cupid.

Always keep dice on you for a fast reading better to know then not at all.

Always wear a bell, it wards evil away.

If a raven is near a sick person, then there is no chance of recovery for that person.

Never look between your legs at a funeral, if you do then you'll get THE SIGHT but only the sight of things that don't wanna be seen.

If you see three blue jays at once then there will be a death very soon.

If you see three red jays then someone you know will die a horrible death.

Always give each piece of jewlrey a purpose.

If you respect a spiders web, you will meet a new friend.

Have a lucky stone on you at all times.

Keeping spiders in your home keeps away bad dreams.

A cat sitting on someone’s grave means that person’s soul has arrived in hell.

Always repay your debts to the fae or else.

Never point a sharp object at the sky or your guardian angel will leave you.

Keep a bit of hair from all you love, you never know when you'll need it.

Never cross your legs when doing a reader, it blocks the energy flow.

Always keep food of any kind on your person because you never know who or what might be hungry. Better the food eaten then you.

Never leave the door open at night, it lets in dark things.

If a magpie gives you a sign then best believe them. They only ever help if it's really important.

Chants to Charge Crystals with Intent

I find it easier to charge things with intent if I have something like a chant to focus on, so here you go

For psychic stones

Clear of mind, clear of sight

I can see the future bright

For power and catalyst stones

With your power fuel my spells

Hopes and dreams and wishing well

For emotional healing stones

Take what’s broken, make it whole

Heal all the wounds of my soul

Grow again straight and true

Bring all that’s good to full bloom

For manifestation stones

As the Magician to me reminds

The world is affected by my mind

To my thoughts it responds in kind

I’ll go forward at my best

To north, to south, to east, to west

Let all my hopes be manifest

For plant growth stones

My garden is green

My garden will grow

This I see

This I know

For physical protection stones

In this place I am safe

With this stone I am safe

As I go I am safe

As I am I am safe

For emotional protection and depression dispelling stones

Darkness, sadness, anger, hate

Sorrowful energies be dispelled

Fragile feelings of love and light

Will be protected safe and sound

For self love and healing stones

In my heart and mind I know

The strength to love myself and grow

For grounding stones

Water cleans me

Fire burns in me

Air holds me

Earth supports me

Spirit moves me

And I am free

For luck and success stones

Luck, power, success I find

I can make the future kind

For sleep and good dream stones

Dreams be kind, dreams be sweet

Let me have a gentle sleep

Good luck incantation

I created this off the top of my head tonight.

Take a small break and step outside and say while looking up eyes closed into the rain,

“wash away bad luck and pain. Let this rain renew me again. A fresh start and clean air, let no bad energy be stuck to me again.

Warding and Protection During Spirit Flight

This Post is for and dedicated to @ivycrownedwitch, who generously commissioned me for research by way of donation to the CvltSqvad Fundraiser, to gather together spells or talismans on warding, and protection during spirit flight. NGL, This was a bit of a tricky ask, and I honestly wasn’t sure where to start to find historical examples 😅 However, the search was not entirely fruitless at least from an operative witchcraft angle, and I found a few solid examples, and enough related information that anyone interested should be able to build out a warding method from a variety of materials for a variety of use cases.

In The Viridarium Umbris,  Daniel Schulke  lists a variety of plants that could be allied to suit the purpose with a little ingenuity:

Of further interest to the topic of protection while outside the body, are these sections of Roger J Hornes Folk Witchcraft: A Guide To Lore, Land, and the Familiar Spirit for the Solitary Practitioner::

“Mallow is often prepared as an unguent and applied to the body in order to protect against harm and cushion the wearer from metaphorical “barbs” he or she may experience.”
“[…] Simple talisman is made of rowan berries, pierced and dried, then strung on a red thread. Over it, the following charm is spoken to awaken its protective qualities:
                        Rowan Berry and red thread,
Bring all evil to its sped.”
“[..] charm of defense and blessing was used against “elf-shot” a kind of attack from the spirit world that could be performed by faeries or by witches during spirit-flight.
                       I charge thee against arrowshot,
                      against doorshot, against wombshot,
                      against eyeshot, against tongueshot,
                      against livershot, against lungshot,
                      against heartshot, all the most.
In our Lady’s name, I pray it.”

In Traditional Witchcraft: A Cornish Book of Ways, Author Gemma Gary Provides the following: This recipe, apparently intended to be employed as a sprinkling powder:

“To raise a protective boundary in preparation for potentially dangerous, harmful, or unfamiliar situations and in cases of suspected ill-wishing:
Clove Oil - 5 drops
Dragons Blood - 2 tsp
Fern - 3 tsp
Frankincense - 1 tsp
Holly - 1 tsp
Horehound - 1 tsp
Juniper - 1 tsp
Mint oil - 3 tsp
Mullein - 1 ½ tsp,
Pine needles - 1 tsp,
Alum 1 - 1 ½ tsp

As well as the following charm:

“An old iron key, tied to a red cord that passes through a hag stone, is another charm that employs the holed stone to bestow otherworldy protection upon the home and all who dwell within it, whilst also making use of the potent protective qualities of iron”

In The Black Toad, The same author provides these examples of protective warding talismans, which could likely be put to good use for the purpose*:

The following paper talisman found in the Black Toad is an interesting example of talismanic magic, and several variations of this seal exist, a version also appears in Reginald Scot’s Discoverie of Witchcraft:

Within The Galdabrok, (Flowers translation) are found a number of talismans for similar ends, which could also be leveraged specifically for the purpose of astral travel:

The Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells By  Judika Isles is likely my least favorite texts to source, but does list the following:

ROLOR Square
This magic square allegedly enables you to fly like a crow. Write the following onto parchment, preferably using Raven’s Feather Ink [Typo?]
R O L O R
O B U F O
L U A U L
O F U B O
R O L O R
Pin this paper to your chest. Close your eyes, relax, and see whether you fly.”

The same text recommends an incense for spirit flight,  originally authored by  Dion Fortune:

“Benzoin Dittany of Crete Sandalwood Vanilla bean Grind all the dried ingredients into a fine powder, burn on lit charcoal [..]”

As well as another incense, composed of Mugwort and Dittany of Crete, also employed as a powder, and recommends petition of the Goddess Artemis:

“Dittany of Crete and Mugwort, two herbs closely associated with Artemis, offer assistance with accomplishing astral projection, and protection during the journey.”
  • Burn the Herbs as incense to accompany your journey
  • fill a pillow with the combined herbs
  • Simultaneously appeal to Artemis for assistance with your goal”

And recommends maintaining Air Potatoes (Dioscorea bulbifera) on your property to prevent uninvited witches from reaching your home through spirit flight.

Again, thanks to @ivycrownedwitch for commissioning me for research by way of donation to the Cvltsqvad Fundraiser for Sloth!

If you would like me to dig up some spells in a similar vein from these and similar texts, please read the pinned post on my blog and make a donation to our fundraiser!

“The method of ‘whispering’ the incantation or charm is reminiscent fo the practices we find in Russian folk magic. The whispering technique also has the advantage of accessing the charm in a more concrete and physical manner, where the breath uttering the spell can be blown in a specific direction. For example, the breath is commonly blown into a glass of water or alcohol, which is then drunk by the client or applied onto an object. The magical force is thus transferred from the mind and mouth of the magician into a specific target which is imbued with its healing or harming power.”

— Historiola: The Power of Narrative Charms by Carl Nordblom

Anonymous asked:

So I’ve seen a number of charms meant to protect a home from bad weather, but have you come across any folkloric examples that do the opposite in the form of a curse/hex? Hope you’re doing well, really enjoy your blog!

Wow, I'm sorry I took so long to reply. Totally jinxed myself by publicly saying I'd have time to. Do I never learn?

So you're looking for a spell to cause bad weather/storms?

Bringing Storms

In his Philosophy of Natural Magic, Agrippa states that, “...the head and throat of the chameleon, if they be burnt with oaken wood, cause storms and lightnings.” This is from the Hahn & Whitehead translation.

Isobel Gowdie spoke about raising winds with her fellow witches in Scotland:

“When we raise the wind, we take a rag of cloth, and wet it in water; and we take a beetle and knock the rag on a stone, and we say thrice over:
‘I knock this rag upon this stane, To raise the wind, in the Devil's name; It shall not lie until I please again!’
When we would lay the wind, we dry the rag, and say (thrice over):
‘We lay the wind in the Devil's name, [It shall not] rise while we [or I] like to raise it again!’

Note that here, “beetle” likely refers to either “a pestle-shaped mallet or pounder for kitchen use, for bruising barley, mashing potatoes, etc.” or “a flat or round piece of wood used by dyers or by washerwomen to beat clothes” according to the Dictionaries of the Scots Language.

[Image description: gif of rolling waves under a cloudy sky with lightning flashing in the distance. End description.]

Whistling aboard a ship brings storms and the angry devil to the vessel.

You may also dig a deep hole in the earth and fill it with water, stirring counterclockwise with your finger until the rain comes.

In Witches’ Potions and Spells, Kathryn Paulsen records: “To make rain, boil hog bristles in a large kettle of water. Leave them for a good long time. If you can be patient and keep awake, the rain will come.

Sometimes prayers are effectively made for particular weather. Read the story A Witch in Santorini for an example. I also recommend building relationships with storm spirits if you plan to do anything like this regularly. When you change the weather you impact such a vast area, so involving spirits with a larger scope and broader knowledge in the work can be a help.

“Bioregionalism is an important part of Traditional Witchcraft, because it is within our local landscape that we can most thoroughly experience the mysteries of the natural world and tap into the immense wisdom and power that lies therein. To get to know your bioregion, try doing these researches:

• Native herbs, flowers and trees;

• Native animals (including birds and fish);

• Nearest natural bodies of water;

• Other natural features, such as forest, mountains, or deserts;

• Nearest parks or other natural areas open to the public.”
