The Quernmore Early Medieval Burial and Shroud, 600-700CE, Lancaster City Museum, Lancaster, Lancashire
This shroud belongs to a poignant collection of objects and human remains; remnants of an Early Medieval burial that was discovered in 1973 on the isolated site of the Jubilee Tower car park at Quernmore, overlooking Morecambe Bay and beyond.
The ‘coffin’ consists of two dug-out timbers, and the large piece of woven fabric would have been used as a shroud and wrapped around the body. All that remains of the person, who was buried with care, is their hair and nails, which were preserved by the peat-rich soil.
