rin rolls over in his bed when he finally sends the message.

just a simple "are you up?" takes him a whole ten minutes to type, and he already wants to jump off a very tall building. it's nearly three in the morning, how on earth could you possibly still be awake? he feels stupid. he is stupid when it comes to you.

but he can't sleep, and his chest swells from thoughts of you.

he thinks of having you all to himself most nights, holding you so close he can finally get a taste of holding moonlight—and he wonders if this feeling's mutual or if it's just him who bears this much love like an exploding star.

he covers his face with a pillow and groans. how pathetic. it's only been a couple of hours since your last date anyway. you went to this nice aquarium in the city with rin following you around like a lost puppy. he listened to your explanation about sharks and watched you giggle with child-like excitement as you pointed at the cute pufferfish.

"hey, rinnie, take a photo of me and this little guy."

he grumbled when he did what you said, but he set that picture as his lock screen now. you're unaware, though. you will tease him forever if you know. he just adores your wide smile, okay? and whatever that fish is.

he got you an ice cream on the way home when you surprised him with matching keychains you bought earlier. it's nothing expensive; a pair of blue-pink jellyfish that you claimed, "this is so us, baby."

rin's ears practically turned red at the sight of you shyly handing him the gift.

fuck yeah, those jellyfish are definitely you and him, alright. rin wanted to instantly melt into a puddle right there. he tried to play it cool by muttering a small "thanks" while patting your hair, but he was dying inside. he kind of wishes he could marry you on the spot.

the younger itoshi sighs. the clock is probably mocking him with the way it's loudly ticking. realizing that you haven't responded, he considers giving up and pushing himself to sleep.

"i mean, she must be exhausted. she needs to rest," he whispers to the ghost in his room who nods at everything he says.

rin deeply breathes. yes. you guys can always talk later. not at this ungodly hour, preferably.

"okay. never mind. i'm going to sleep."

rin unlocks his phone—eyes softening at the new wallpaper—then ponders for a moment whether to delete the message he sent several minutes ago or not.

he almost taps the confirmation button when you suddenly call, and he swears he never answers so fast in his life.

You didn’t even say anything.

All you did was glance up at Rin, lift your arms ever so slightly, a subtle little signal you knew he wouldn’t miss.

And just like that, he sighed. The tiniest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips, before bending down and effortlessly lifting you up into his arms.

“…You’re ridiculous,” he muttered, but his grip was steady, secure. Gentle.

“You love it,” you said with a smug grin, wrapping your arms around his neck.

He didn’t respond—at least not verbally. But the way he adjusted his hold on you, carrying you like it was second nature, said more than words ever could.

You rested your head against his chest as he walked, pretending to be asleep just so he wouldn’t put you down.

“Don’t act like you’re tired. You just want me to carry you,” Rin said flatly.

“You’re so strong, it’s basically a crime not to take advantage of it,” you murmured, grinning up at him.

He rolled his eyes, but the way his fingers curled around you more securely gave him away.

You didn’t even need to ask anymore. If you so much as lifted your arms slightly or leaned against him, he was already there—ready to carry, protect, and spoil you in his own quiet Rin-way.

Once, Bachira caught it happening and whispered to Isagi, “Dude… he’s so whipped it’s adorable.”

Isagi nodded. “She didn’t even say anything. He just knew.”

“Built-in princess detector,” Bachira grinned.

You pretended not to hear, but Rin definitely did.

“Keep talking and I’ll drop her on you,” he muttered, glaring at them.

But he didn’t. Not even close.

Because truth was, he’d carry you through anything. No questions asked.

chapter 1: laptops don’t like latte

the café was unusually crowded for a weekday, but you managed to squeeze into a corner booth with your laptop, notebooks, and half-empty iced coffee. you were deep into your project, typing furiously while music played faintly through your earbuds. everything was going fine — until it wasn’t.

one second, you were highlighting text; the next, cold liquid was seeping into your keyboard.

“oh, crap.” you whipped your head up, glare locked and loaded.

the culprit? a guy with dark hair, wide teal eyes, and an expression that looked more dead inside than apologetic. he froze for a second before snapping out of it.

“sorry,” he muttered stiffly, snatching a handful of napkins from the counter and dabbing uselessly at the mess.

“yeah, this isn’t helping.” you groaned, grabbing your laptop and tipping it sideways in some desperate attempt to save it. the screen flickered once, then died.

perfect.

“sorry,” he said again, sounding even less convincing this time.

“are you just gonna keep apologizing, or…?” you raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to say literally anything else.

he blinked. “uh… do you… want to borrow mine?”

“your what?”

“my laptop.” he gestured toward his bag, like this was some normal thing to offer.

“…you’re serious?”

“unless you’d rather sit here and cry about it.”

wow. charming.

“fine,” you grumbled, crossing your arms. “but if i’m using your laptop, you’re staying here in case this breaks too.”

he sighed like you were the most exhausting person alive but dropped into the seat across from you anyway. pulling his laptop from his bag, he slid it across the table.

“don’t mess with my files,” he warned flatly.

“whatever,” you shot back, already logging in.

the next hour passed quietly — you typing, him scrolling on his phone.

when you finally finished your work, you closed his laptop with a satisfied sigh. “okay, done.”

“cool,” he said, sounding completely uninterested.

you grinned. “so… i feel like you owe me.”

he shot you a flat look. “for what?”

“for breaking my laptop!”

“it was an accident.”

“still happened.” you leaned forward with a smug smile. “so… i think i should get your number. you know, in case my files didn’t save or something.”

he gave you the most unimpressed stare you’d ever seen.

“seriously?”

“yep.” you held your phone out expectantly.

he stared at it like it physically pained him to take it, but eventually snatched it from your hand.

“you’re persistent,” he muttered, tapping in his number.

“yup!” you beamed, snatching your phone back before he could change his mind.

he was already halfway out the door when he turned back, eyes sharp with warning.

“don’t text me unless you have to.”
