About me/this blog: I'm Tessa, I'm in my mid-twenties and I'm from the Netherlands! My asks are open, anon included, and I love hearing any questions/thoughts/requests about different characters/ships or the fics I'm working on!

This blog is mainly about the tv show The West Wing, though I also reblog stuff from Yellowjackets, The Diplomat, and general things I find interesting.

When it comes to The West Wing, my favourite characters are CJ Cregg and Leo McGarry, and in any fandom really I'm drawn to minor characters (especially the women) and femslash pairings. For TWW this means I have a soft spot for characters like Andy, Carol, Amy, and recently Angela, and that my most written ship is Andy/CJ, closely followed by CJ/Carol (though that never takes away from my love for CJ/Danny).

It's so so hard to pick a favourite actually, but this is definitely in my top 3: the lunch order by franglemand. And it's one of my favourites partially because it ties right into what I wish people wrote more of? It's Margaret coming to Carol for help when, in the aftermath of the leak and Toby's confession, CJ's started skipping lunch, and is in general not really taking care of herself well. It's short, but I love it, and it's part of what made me interested in writing this fic of mine where CJ develops an eating disorder after the leak.

And I love it because it shows the dynamics between the assistants and their bosses so well? Margaret notices and cares, and she knew how to manage Leo but CJ is new to her, and the fact that she knows to go to Carol and it's the two of them talking about how to help CJ eat something; I love seeing how the assistants to their work. I love it when people develop those characters and all those different relationships.

Which, femslash aside maybe but that feels repetitive to say at some point, is also all something that I wish people would write more of! I love the angst of the leak aftermath, I love it when fics or headcanons explore the immense loneliness CJ was experiencing that last season and how it might've affected her, and I love it when people really give the assistants (and lbr, other female characters) the chance to really shine and be the main characters. There's so much possibility there, both in their relationships with each other and how they help each other do their work, and their different dynamics with their respective bosses, especially when time goes on and each of the senior staff either leaves or gets a different job. (What was Carol up to while CJ was COS? Were Bonnie and Ginger involved in getting bikes to Will's office? What did they think of the goat? What did all the assistants say about Donna's crush on Josh? What did Bonnie think of the leak? Did Carol and Annabeth get along when she was in the comms office briefly? How long did it take Margaret to fully get CJ? There's just so much!!)

- Can knit. It's great for dexterity and has made staff members scarves and hats.

- She has big sister vibes, with a little brother and sister.

- East Coast girlie from Maryland, her parents are still there.

- Loves reality television but only Dana and Robby know. She did get McKay hooked on the Great British Bake off.

- Cut her hair during COVID because she needed a change. Robby helped.

- We've seen it already but definitely the mother of the group - has extra bandages in her bag and has grabbed Frank and Robby by the ears on numerous occasions.

- Has a secret sweet tooth - like she loves yoga and clean eating but brownies are her kryptonite.

- Got into medicine because her grandmother was a nurse and she loved listening to her stories whilst wanting to change things.

🍓 What’s a fic you’ve written you feel is underrated?

This is difficult! I struggle to call any of them underrated in a sense, cause for the most part most of my fics get more hits than I ever expect them to lmao. Not in a self-depricating way, I think they're nice fics, but I write a lot of not canon and not popular ships, so I'm always pleasantly surprised when there's over 50 hits!

I would say the closest would be let me look at you? which still has 100 hits! But I was really excited about that concept, and it ended up getting one (much appreciated) comment a few weeks after I posted it, and I would've liked more. But at the same time, it's 'CJ figuring out queer gender expression' in a CJ/Andy context, which is not a popular concept and not a popular ship, so like? It's not underrated per se? It's just not popular? But I really liked it, I want to write more of the same, and it would've been nice if there'd been more feedback!

🍑 If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?

Oh I love the chance to be a little pretentious. One of my favourite poets is Amy Levy, I just adore her, and there are two poems in particular that I am still dying to write something about. One is at a dinner party (which is also the inspiration for my AO3 name! "it is our secret, only ours // since all the world is blind".) But the one I wanna talk about is on the threshold.

They're both poems generally interpreted to be about secret sapphic love, and the tragedy of it, and that's just something I love writing about for Claudia Jean in particular. On the threshold in particular, it's the speaker having dreamt that her girlfriend died, and the pain of not being able to properly grieve her; even in death, she can't actually show how much she loved her. And I am just dying to write some CJ/Andy fic to the backdrop of either the Rosslyn shooting, or the explosion in Gaza, and that heartbreaking sense of "if you'd died, no one would even know how much I'd miss you". It's beautiful, it's heartbreaking, I need it yesterday.

🍍 What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?

I love college AUs, I love vampire AUs (even if that's one that's a struggle to make work for TWW, but hey), I like a cute lowstakes coffeeshop AU (weed or coffee kind idc). I've never been a fan of highschool AUs or omegaverse AUs?

🍋 What’s your favorite spicier trope to write?

I answered this before, but it's still true: this ficlet broke my writer's block the other day bc I decided to try writing some purely self-indulgent smut, which ended up being strap-ons and squirting, and it worked. So. I do honestly think those are always in the top 5. Recently I've been particularly excited about the idea of writing a character giving or receiving a blowjob on a strap? And aside from that, I love writing overstimulation, and when I manage to figure out how certain characters would make it work, I enjoy exploring some d/s dynamics here and there.

My friend inspired me to write out a meeting between Sam and Andy in like, the week or so following the Andy/Toby divorce, when she still has business at the White House but it's too soon to meet with Toby and act like that's not painful. (Specifically, with the context that the two of them get along joyfully in that brief flash in Ellie, and the fact that Sam was engaged to be married but broke it off not that long ago, either)

And. I love him. I love Sam blurting out shit he shouldn't say. And I just feel like that's something Andy appreciates to a degree.

So a little excerpt:

“He likes you more than he lets on,” Andy assures him, denying the offer of tea with a shake of her head. She’s not sure what answer she’s expecting. That’s nice of you to say, maybe, or a simple thank you, or a joke about Toby being hard to read at times. Perhaps nothing more than dismissive nod. She’s not expecting to cough, almost choking on nothing but air, when Sam says “more than he likes you, right now, I’d guess,” before he looks at her like a deer caught in its own headlights. His mouth opens, closes, and does that a few more times before he stammers out a hurried and apologetic ”I’m so sorry, Congresswoman, I don’t know what—” Andy can’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the whole thing. She shakes her head, waving her hand as her face turns red from coughing, tears forming in her eyes that have nothing at all to do with the divorce. “It’s fine,” she insists, clearing her throat, knowing she must sound a little hysterical. Maybe Terry had a point about postponing this meeting. “Don’t worry about it. You’re— oh God, you’re not wrong.”

The way I'm writing this is a little all over the place but I really am so excited about the concept actually even though I'm just writing little bits of conversation here and there now and no way of piecing it all together yet but !!

“Josh kept telling me I shouldn’t marry her,” Sam admits. He’s looking more bashful than Andy ever saw him during the campaign. She glances at the wall he shares with Toby. “He never really liked her to begin with, but he swore up and down we’d make each other miserable if we went through with it.” He’s being more honest than she wanted him to be; more honest than she hopes he expects her to be in return. Still, there’s something touching about it. “And he was right?” she asks, so she doesn’t really have to answer yet. Sam nods. “Didn’t see it at the time, but— it was never going to work. Told him to get lost the first time he said it, though.” She chuckles. She looks down, staring into the water that’s left in her cup before offering, more hesitantly than she offered the divorce itself, “been there, done that.” “Yeah?” Andy nods. Her eyes dart to the window between the offices again, covered but still there. Toby isn’t even inside, she knows he’s in a meeting elsewhere, but that makes her feel no less wary of being overheard. “My mother tried to warn me,” she says eventually. “She always said I was too stubborn for my own good.” “Hard to listen when it feels like love,” he shrugs. “When it is love,” she corrects. Sam taps his pen on the desk the way she does her fingers on her cup. She’s not sure he believes her; she’s not sure why she cares.

my roman empire is that abbey bartlet was a confident, sexy, smart, determined, world renowned surgeon who had to give up her career, watch her husband get shot, give up her medical license for keeping her husband alive, watch her husband run for reelection even though he had promised her he wouldn’t, almost lose her child to a kidnapping, get scrutinized by the media for trying to return to medicine, and watch her husband's health deteriorate in front of her, only for fans of the west wing to criticize her for being too angry and too sexy and too loud and annoyed all the time and not “first lady-like” and how abbey is a literal analogy for hillary clinton, who is brilliant and motivated and still hated by millions of people for some weird mix of reasons that boiled down to the fact that she doesn’t act the way that people want women who are married to powerful men to act. because people want women to be beautiful even when they’re going through hell and act submissive even though they’re not. because people say that they’re feminists but freak out when any relationship isn’t all about the man. That’s the same reason that people hate michelle obama for having opinions, and the reason people hate dr. biden for daring to ask people to call her dr. But I can’t say that so I say the bermuda triangle.
