A Kiss for Calypso

It had been months since the Yule Ball. Only like two but it had seemed like ages to Calypso who still thought often about that almost kiss with Johanna.

The rest of the night had gone lovely and Alejandro had eventually showed up after he realized how unfair that was to Johanna. He was a good guy and all the girls agreed they overreacted when he went over the top to make it up.

He brought flowers for all his lady friends and although he came to dance with Jo he made sure Val was slipped a romantic poem that made her blush. Gentlemanly Alejandro then danced with Jo.

Calypso and Ominis both had been infuriated by this but what could they do? Johanna and Ale were close friends, bonded by their experiences in an alternate universe, both being single for a while. They also annoyingly shared similar interests.

Anyway since the Yule Ball Calypso hadn’t seen Johanna. They’d exchanged a few owls but life seemed to want to keep them a part from each other. Calypso had to go away for a while and Johanna had gotten sick the last time they had planned to meet.

With Valentines coming up and everyone planning things for the ones they loved Calypso couldn’t help but feel very sad and lonely. Here she was without the one person she really wanted. It didn’t matter if Johanna didn’t feel the same, Calypso was okay loving her anyway. She just needed her by her side.

She sat alone by the lake flipping through her scrapbook of memories with all her favorite people. Her fingers lingered on the edge of a photo of her and Johanna, they were both smiling and Jo’s face was covered with her lipstick. A tear fell onto it.

Another page held them leaning against each other at a picnic, them in their dresses, them with Alyssa and Sebastian the chicken. And the sleepover pics. It was if the universe was laughing at her sadness when a breeze blew the smell of lilacs, the scent of Jo, right under her nose.

A train whistled in the distance reminding her of all the miles in between them. She wondered if Jo thought of her, if she thought about that kiss too. She thought of her nose freckles, those brown eyes. And Calypso let herself cry, staring at the sky.

But those tears weren’t long lasted when a squeal of her name made her spin around to see those bright eyes shining as the brunette girl she’d been dreaming of charged down the beach toward her. “Calypso my love! Happy Valentine’s Day! Or galentine’s I don’t care! I finally made it!”

Calypso shrieked with joy and spun her around, smooching her cheeks, making the girl giggle and blush. “Jo! You’re here! I missed you so much! ILY!”

She set her down and brushed some of her hair out of her eyes. Johanna paused a moment staring into Calypso’s green eyes and time stood still a moment.

Johanna finally stepped back, breaking the moment with a nervous laugh. “Yeah I’m here. It’s been forever hasn’t it? I’ve missed talking to you. I was finally able to pull away from school to come. But you know what the best thing is?” She asked excitedly. Calypso grinned and shook her head.

“No I don’t. What is it Johanna? What’s the news?”

Johanna spun in a circle, arms outstretched as she sang, “I get to stay the next few months!”

Calypso caught her hands as she came around and pulled her close, hands intertwined held between them. Her freckles seemed to pop against her glowing face. “Really? You’re serious? Really serious?” She leaned so close their noses touched.

Johanna laughed and rubbed her nose playfully against hers. “Yes I’m serious Cal! I’ll be free to be here with you and to visit all my other friends. And spend more time with Ominis! He’ll be so happy to see you!”

Calypso’s heart couldn’t help but fall at the mention of Ominis. Yes she was glad Jo was happy, she was the happiest when she was with him. Jo was happily straight with Ominis and her au bf Silas. Sure she openly admitted her friends were hot and would joke about kissing them but sometimes Cal wished it was real. Wished like she did on that star at the ball.

But those thoughts faded from her mind when her day was filled with joy that came in Jo’s form. The pair leaned up against each other and flipped through her scrapbook laughing about SeBAWKtian. Her need for kisses was soothed from Jo tickling her and smooching her cheek whenever Calypso playful chewed on hers. Making Jo laugh and shriek as she avoided her advances and splashing in the ocean after they had flown there for a picnic.

It was a valentines that would remain special to her. As the sun set and the pair drank some juice at the small bar near the seashore Calypso handed her the gift she had set aside a month ago. It was a beautiful drawing of the pair in a flowered frame. Johanna gasped and her eyes filled with tears.

“Aww Cal you shouldn’t have! This is so thoughtful! I didn’t get to get you anything, and chocolate seems so lame compared to this. You’re truly the sweetest”

Calypso laughed and waved it off blushing. “It was nothing and besides, your presence is the best gift I got today. I know I joke a lot about stealing you from Ominis but I truly just value you and your friendship.” She froze when Jo took her hand.

“Calypso…” Johanna’s face had turned serious. “I need you to promise me something. Okay?”

“Yes of course anything! What’s wrong Jo?”

Johanna sucked in a deep breath before continuing. “I’m giving you a gift. Just once, and then we never talk about it again. To thank you for being wonderful and because it’s the only thing that could equal it.”

Calypso nodded. “Okay…just once I promise. But what am I promising to? To do something or-“

“I’m saying you can kiss me!” Johanna blurted.

“Wait-what?!” Calypso was gob-smacked. Never in her wildest- well never in her normal dreams would she ever expect to hear those words out of her dear friend’s mouth. The mouth she’d wanted to kiss.

“Yes!” Johanna spluttered red-faced. “Now shut up and do it before I change my mind or-“

Calypso didn’t waste another minute, grabbing her friend’s face between both hands and smooching her hard. Calypso had always dreamed of doing it gently, softly and exploratory. But this was desperate and stolen from a moment in time that she would make the best of. It was a kiss that made Johanna stupidly grin against her lips when it ended, flushed and lips swollen and dark pink.

“I…uhhh well….happy Valentine’s Day Calypso?”

Calypso was breathless too, and couldn’t stop staring at the breathtaking mess she’d made of Jo. Her mind was spinning and she felt like flying away. She felt like she could touch the clouds. Cal wanted to kiss her again and again but she’d promised and she didn’t want to ruin it. So instead she breathed against her lips “Happy Valentine’s Day Johanna,” and pulled away reluctantly.

The girls stared at each other a few minutes until Imelda’s wolf whistle threw them into a fit of awkward and relieved laughter, easing the tension.

They took a sip of their juices and looked back out at the ocean a moment before Calypso spoke.

“That was certainly unexpected but enjoyable.”

Johanna laughed softly and was about to reply when Ominis’s voice cut them off, as he approached with a beautiful bouquet of roses for his girlfriend.

“What was unexpected? Did I miss something?”

Johanna turned to him in surprise and began to say something about nothing at all but Calypso couldn’t resist and with a smirk grabbed Jo, kissing her again. Johanna blushed and Calypso tossed her white blonde curls when she pulled away.

“Oh just me making out with your girlfriend is all.”

“What?!” Ominis shouted.
