How To Establish Flow In Writing

image

Most writers have trouble establishing flow or rhythm because they tend to turn writing into a metric. In the writing word, most tend to focus entirely too much on hitting a certain word count rather than enmeshing themselves into the story. Investment into the story is what establishes rhythm and flow, and focusing on word count is counterproductive to that objective.

It also doesn't matter how much time you spend writing each day so long as you write each day. Most of the battle is showing up and that's where people get stuck because they don't see immediate results. Writing stories and books takes time and one must be patient when it comes to mastering their craft. Whether you write for thirty minutes or thirty hours doesn't matter, all that matters is that you show up.

When you're sitting at the laptop, all you must think about is the story itself and how the scenes play out. Don't worry about time or word count or any other arbitrary metric that doesn't have anything to do with the story at hand. Simply type and keep typing until the scenes in your head are done for the day.

Writing is not difficult; remaining in your seat to write is difficult.

To establish flow, you must calm yourself down and create a comfortable environment for yourself. It is not productive to write in an uncomfortable environment or some sort of hellhole. You don't have to self-flagellate in order to get some writing done, nor do you have to place yourself in any sort of dungeons. You can write with a hot cup of tea, sitting on a comfortable couch or at a big, mahogany desk with a cushy executive chair. The environment doesn't matter as long as it works for you (except hellholes and dungeons).

Hope this helps!
