It’s late when he crawls into your bed, a cramped twin mattress standard to the Pony Express quarters. Frigid arms and hands draw you away from sleep as they wrap around your frame, as the figure folds into you like he was trying to subsume your body into his. It’s pitch black in the rooms at “night” but you know that breath by the quality of its sound, know that face by the stubble on the nape of your neck.
“…Jim…?” You mumble sleepily, draw a sharp breath for a fresh influx of oxygen to your still waking brain.
Only silence greets you back, at least for a moment, as the man buries his face deeper in your neck, holding you just that fraction of an inch closer. “…I’m sick,” he says at last, and the sound is weak and thin, coming out like a hiss.
