It's more prevalent in the UK, however the usage of "cheers" as "thanks" has increased significantly in the US over the past 20 years, at least in my experience. In the 1990s, hearing "cheers" as an expression of gratitude would have been highly unusual. Today it's fairly commonplace, especially among people under 40.
