Questions about example sentences with, and the definition and usage of "Wish"

A: 1) I was using “they” as a generic pronoun for the speaker since I don’t know their identity. “He” or “he/she” is sometimes taught as neutral in academic writing, but I think “they” is more inclusive.

2) Your sentence is hard to understand. I’d describe the character’s feelings like this...

I had not admitted to myself that wanted to die in my brother’s place until I said it out loud. I have to keep living for him and myself because I’m the only one that can. Killing yourself won’t fix what has already happened.

Imagine:

You make a question (ask) and because of this question you get in trouble, you get problems.
A person will tell you : you wish you hadn't asked that?
(you think it would be better not making the question you made?)

I wish

(meaning that you have a strong desire or want) and

I was

(which is commonly used after ‘I wish’, and means that you personally have a strong desire for something)
is used in sentences like

“I wish I was at home”,
or
“I wish I was famous”.

If you use ‘I was’ without ‘I wish’ before it, it means you were doing something because you removed the part that adds the meaning of ‘I wish’.

And we don’t use ‘I wish I were’ because it’s sounds unnatural, ‘were’ is more commonly used for when you are talking past tense about someone else.

Example
“I wish you were with me”

Similar example:
I wish it weren't so cold (today).
I wish it didn't get so cold in Canada. (this isn't just one day, but a general trend that it is often very cold in Canada)

2 → if you really want me to, I will do it.

There’s no difference, but I like #2 better. It’s more casual.

This is a very beautiful sentence! I have put more emphasis on the meaning you are trying to convey, otherwise it sounds like you are talking about superficial happiness that only lasts in this moment. But it sounds a bit strange then because the listener may think “well if I have some ice cream now I will be happy so…”

Your original sentence was good so I don’t think any English speaker would be confused. 😊 When someone says nice things to us like they hope we’re doing well, it’s customary to say well wishes or kind words in response. I hope that helps!
