The Florence Cathedral, formally the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore was completed by 1436, with the dome by Filippo Brunelleschi.

Brunelleschi observed that with a fixed single point of view, parallel lines appear to converge at a single point in the distance. Brunelleschi applied a single vanishing point to a canvas, and soon artists were using Brunelleschi’s method of perspective to astonishing affects in their paintings. Art Renaissance. Florence Duomo Cupola My personal favourite in Italy so far has to be Brunelleschi's Duomo. From it's innovative design to its beautiful green and red marble facade, the Duomo looks over the tranquil city of Florence. Still standing as the largest brick dome in the world, the Duomo gets its strength from two chains which act as bands arround two key structural areas of the Dome, while two layers of herringbone brickwork aim to disperse loads evenly and consistently around the dome.

Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore Church was built between 1420 and 1436. The dome has become one of the most famous features of the Italian Renaissance.
