Chrysanthemum loves her name but on her first day of school, she gets teased for its uniqueness. She tells her parents “School is no place for me… My name is too long. It scarcely fits on my name tag. And I’m named after a flower.” But when her music teacher reveals she is naming her baby her Chrysanthemum, everyone wants to change their name to a flower. A great picture book to promote identity, friendships, self-management and female lead characters. #childrenslibrarylady #kidsbooks #picturebo Chrysanthemum Book, Chrysanthemum Activities, Respect Pictures, Kevin Henkes, Positive Self Esteem, All About Me Preschool, Childrens Library, Character Analysis, Teaching Literacy

As we read the book, I passed…

Chrysanthemum is a classic book for teaching names, individuality, self-love and confidence! Hand in hand with that, is the important concepts of being accepting and supportive of others as well. I always love to add these concepts into our classroom mission statement that we create together during the first week of school. The skills are easily reinforced with the fun read aloud Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. I’m excited to share with you the Chrysanthemum activities I use in my classroom.
