Born today in 1878 John Masefield moved around 1915 to Lollingdon Farm in Cholsey, Berks now Oxon, a setting that inspired poems and sonnets under the title Lollingdon Downs. In 1920 he settled with family in Boars Hill where he somehow found the time to keep bees, poultry and herd goats alongside writing prolifically, organising the Oxford Recitations and founding with others the Scottish Association for the Speaking of Verse.
