The project focuses on documenting evidence of human occupation and land use around the bay of Porto Rafti in eastern Attica, Greece. Work in 2020 and 2021 built on the progress achieved in the 2019 pilot season, which established the presence of a Final Neolithic/Early Bronze Age obsidian processing centre on the Pounta peninsula, a sizeable Late Helladic IIIC settlement on the islet of Raftis, and some minor pre- and post-Ptolemaic activity on the Koroni peninsula, previously assessed as a single-period military camp. Fieldwork in 2021 documented a dense, multi-period surface scatter on the islet of Praso, including Final Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Late Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman material. Remains of waste products from the manufacture of Late Helladic IIIC White Ware, Classical/Hellenistic tile, Late Roman tile, and metal indicate...

We focus on gender sociology and knowledge production within the subfield of Aegean survey, particularly on survey projects conducted in Greece and Cyprus. Through analysis of both survey directorship and survey publication teams, we clarify several major questions. Whom do scholarly networks of survey directors omit? And what do we miss when we view the development of survey (1) from a top-down perspective, as the creation and legacy of project directors, and (2) with a focus on field methods and artifact collection rather than the interpretation of survey data? Five archaeologists with field experience in the eastern Mediterranean then discuss these questions as they relate to their own experience and area of specialization.

The Ptolemies and the 3rd Century B.C.E. Ceramic Assemblage

Aegean and Greek mainland fostered cultural exchange. I examine the ceramic evidence from two sites to assess the network of interaction and its impact on the function and production of Hellenistic pottery types. The ceramic assemblage from Eretria, a city with a historically Greek affiliation, will serve as a point of comparison for the evidence from Koroni, a Ptolemaic site in Attika. The ceramic assemblage from Koroni tells us three things: 1) the fine ware indicates that the Ptolemies had already begun to be involved in what will become the Hellenistic koine, 2) Koroni was not directly linked with Athens, which throws into question the function of the site, and 3) the Ptolemaic intervention in and then withdrawal from Attika and the Aegean was one reason behind the fluctuation in the market for Attic black gloss pottery.

As a result, this is a composite document that conflates and combines any number of adjustments offered by team leaders particularly during the first two field seasons of the project.
