Hajime was pumped up, and it’s obvious that he is. He’s running the treadmill a little faster today and his form feels nothing less than perfection. In short, he’s feeling good. He’s feeling himself. Issei and Takahiro watch their friend from afar, doing another workout machine on the opposite side of the gym. They’ve been staring at him for a hot minute now but he seems to be too into his own world to notice.
“Are you guys still staring at him?” Tooru asks as he grabs his phone and angles it to his face. He’s on facetime with Issei’s phone this time. Since he said, quote, “Takahiro’s way of showing the camera something is like those middle school fight videos,” end quote. He left to make himself something to drink and came back to see those two still watching Hajime.
Issei looks down at his phone that was in his hand and flips the camera, bringing it up so Hajime is in view. “Look at him,” he says.
“He’s motivated,” Tooru hums.
“I’m so proud,” Takahiro sighs and shakes his head, wiping away an invisible tear from the corner of his eye.
Tooru nods, wistfully adding, “He’s come a long way.”
“He hasn’t even asked for her number yet,” Issei states.
“Don’t jinx it,” Tooru and Takahiro say at the same time. Issei rolls his eyes and waves the two off. How dramatic. He wasn’t going to jinx things. Probably. Er, hopefully.
“Hey.” Issei and Takahiro jolt at the sudden voice that came from behind them, whipping their heads around to see Hajime. His figure glistens with sweat with his cheeks slightly flushed as he catches his breath after being on the treadmill, a towel draped around his neck.
Takahiro mutters, “Is this what fan service looks like?”
“Yes,” Issei replies.
“Stop it,” Hajime huffs. Tooru can be heard snickering over Issei’s phone. Hajime checks the time on his own device, staring at it for an unusually long second before stuffing it back into the pocket of his shorts. “Let’s go,” he says. He was quick to leave his friends behind and heads straight towards the gym’s entrance. Issei and Takahiro glance at each other before instantly following him not long after.
Hajime swings the door open and exits the gym, turning and walking to the Bone Zone. He stops mid step once he sees a certain someone in the near distance. Takahiro and Issei already caught up to him and the two stop mid step as well. He looks over his shoulder and at his friends, “You two wait here.” He takes a step forward then pauses again. “I mean it,” he glares at them before walking ahead.
“..Should we listen?” Takahiro asks. Issei looks at him before the two guys look at his phone screen, Tooru staring back at them.
“Be inconspicuous,” Tooru affirms.
You left at your usual time rather than earlier. It’s hard to understand why you’ve been walking the dogs earlier these past few days. Maybe it’s because of that time you walked with Hajime to the park, maybe you’ve been leaving early in hopes to catch him.
Tadashi is putting ridiculous thoughts in your head.
You blink out of your daydreaming when you hear Hank yip and start tugging at his leash. “Hey, what-” You look forward only to see the exact man you were just thinking about. Hajime approaches you, though a little awkwardly if you could assume. You look behind you, you were a good distance away from the Bone Zone. Still, even though you are out of sight it didn’t hurt to be cautious. Having to deal with the others finding out you’ve kind of, not really, been meeting up with Hajime will cause them to lose their minds. Koushi already knowing is enough for you.
It’s a little funny, acting like Hajime is your little secret or something. You just don’t want them berating you about getting back into dating. It’s easier for you to go at your own pace.
“Haji,” you smile. Hajime stops in front of you just as you stop in front of him. Hank yips again, tugging at his leash and jumping up. Hajime leans down and pets the corgi, then petting Lucky, then Zuzu. It was a cute sight.
“Not heading to the park?” he asks.
You shake your head, “I was gonna make a couple rounds around the neighborhood instead.” He hums in response, giving the three dogs a bit more affection before standing back up.
“I can walk with you if you want,” he says. It was kind of him to offer but you can’t help but feel a little guilty.
“It’s fine, I’ve already took up too much of your time in the past. I don’t wanna take any more.”
“Didn’t I tell you last time I had fun? I like spending time with you,” Hajime asserts. It’s odd, hearing such a nice statement like that. Maybe because you used to be made to believe that you weren’t enjoyable at all. All because of a loser of a guy, gross. You don’t think like that anymore, even if sometimes it’ll pop back into your head every now and then. But you don’t want to think that way. So hearing that come from someone else’s mouth, especially him, makes you feel… Really good.
You feel your face start to warm and you clear your throat. “Oh, well, uhm..” What are you supposed to say to that? ‘I really like your company too’? Oh, well you could say that. “I really like hanging out with you too. Hank probably agrees,” you say as you motion to said dog. You see a grin creep up on his mouth.
“Coming back from the gym again?” you question.
He nods, “Yeah, I parked my car nearby here since there wasn’t much parking spots near the gym earlier.” Bold faced lie, but you don’t need to know that.
Issei and Takahiro did, in fact, not stay put. The two were hiding behind a car that was close enough to see Hajime talking, but far enough to not be seen. At least, not immediately. Issei peeks out from behind the car, pointing his phone at Hajime’s direction so Tooru could see. “I don’t think he’s asked yet,” he mutters.
“Ugh, what’s taking him so long?” Takahiro groans.
“There has to be a build up,” Tooru says. Issei nods in agreement. He then abruptly crouches down and Takahiro raises a brow.
“What?”
“I almost got caught.”
Hajime looks around as if he felt eyes on him. “Is something wrong?” He hears her ask as he simply shakes his head. Weird. He did feel like someone was watching him but maybe it was his imagination.
“I wanted to ask you something, actually,” he states. He saw her today, which means today has to be his lucky day. If he doesn’t do it now then who knows when exactly he’ll be able to ask for her number. She was looking at him expectantly.
“I was wondering if–” The sound of a phone going off is heard and it cuts him off. She sheepishly smiles at him and takes out her phone, seemingly putting it on silent then putting it away
“Sorry.”
“No, it’s fine. I just wan–” Ding.
Then again, and again, and again. Who the hell is sending messages that fast? He can see the annoyance etching on her face. She takes out her phone once more and he can see her expression change to one of a sense of urgency. “I have to head back,” she quickly says.
“Did something happen?” he asks. He can feel his luck evaporating.
“Dog fight,” she says. Well, not exactly what he was expecting. “I’m sorry. Tell me next time, okay? Have a good day!” She rushes off with a quick goodbye, his eyes following her as she disappears inside the Bone Zone with the three dogs. He admits, he’s a little disheartened that he wasn’t able to ask. Maybe those three dumbasses really are bad luck.
Speaking of, he can feel that he’s being watched again. He turns and spots a flash of black and pink hair behind a nearby car. Of course they wouldn’t listen. He heads towards the parking lot and circles around the car. “Didn’t I tell you two to stay put?” he says, unamused by their antics.
“Tooru told us to,” Issei and Takahiro say at the same time as they point at Issei’s phone.
“What?!” Tooru yells.
“Go home,” Hajime tells them. He strides towards his car, which was on the other side of the lot, listening to his two friends whispering behind him while they followed. Issei did park his car close to his. He can hear Tooru chip in at times. Next time, next time he’ll definitely ask with no interruptions. He just hopes he won’t have to wait too long.
𝐏𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒:
• Hajime confirms all three friends are bad luck
• The dog fight was in fact alleviated
• The dog whisperers are in fact dog whisperers
• You did most of the mediating
• You enjoy Hajime’s company, that alone makes up 99% of the fact that he wasn’t able to ask for your number
• Issei and Takahiro forced him out for ice cream again
