Lt. Joe Leaphorn is invited to join forces with an FBI agent played by Jenna Elfman in the newest, “monsters”-themed trailer (above) for Season 3 of Dark Winds, the acclaimed AMC/AMC+ period crime drama.
Premiering Sunday, March 9, at 9/8c, Dark Winds‘ third season will span eight episodes (as opposed to the usual six).
TVLine readers gave Season 2 a rare average grade of “A+.”
You can watch Season 3’s previous teaser trailer below:
Season 3 picks up six months after the events of Season 2 and follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn (played by 2023 TVLine Performer of the Year finalist Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they investigate the disappearance of two boys, with only an abandoned bicycle and blood-stained patch of ground left in their wake.
Meanwhile, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) attempts to settle into her new life 500 miles from home with the Border Patrol, but stumbles across a conspiracy involving human and drug smuggling with far-reaching implications.
Series regular Deanna Allison is back for Season 3 as Emma Leaphorn, as is A. Martinez (Longmire) in the guest-starring role of Scarborough Police Department Acting Chief Gordo Sena.
New guest stars for Season 3 include the aforementioned Elfman (Fear the Walking Dead) as FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington, Bruce Greenwood (The Resident) as Tom Spenser, Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.) as Budge, Tonantzin Carmelo (NCIS: Origins) as Border Patrol Agent Eleanda Garza, Alex Meraz (Animal Kingdom) as Border Patrol Agent Ivan Muños, Terry Serpico (Law & Order SVU) as Border Patrol Senior Chief Ed Henry, Derek Hinkey (American Primeval) as Shorty Bowlegs, Phil Burke (Rabbit Hole) as Michael Halsey, and Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels) as Dr. Reynolds.

OMG not until 2025? That’s way too long of a wait for such a great, compelling show. Sad that it’s only like 6 episodes each season but that’s better than none at all. Zahn McClarnon is an awesome actor.
The article says eight episodes in this upcoming season…
It’s a sad state of affairs when eight episodes is considered “XL.”
Quality over quantity.
And 2025 has arrived, so it wasn’t too long of a wait and it’s not as if the world ended.
Okay, too soon to say the latter definitively….
I like Bruce Greenwood. I like the whole cast. I am so glad that A. Martinez will be back and of course, I cannot wait to see the great Zahn McClarnon.
Agree on all of that. I am not as thrilled with Jenna Elfman after her turn on Will Trent felt so stilted and awkward. But I’ll hold judgement until I see it.
2025 seems like forever! Guess I’ll have to rewatch S1 & 2 this summer to hold me over until then.
So anxious for this next season, just wish it would come sooner. Reminds me so much of the delays on Longmire and Yellowstone. Not only hard on the viewers but hard on the crew and staff too.
Is Frank ,who was shot and disappeared in cave with money from robbery coming back !!! He was Great on there and was Great at playing the bad guy he portrayed!!
Rumor has it that the innovative screenwriter Tom Brady from “Hell of Wheels” is now working on “Dark Winds.” That would only make an already great show better.
I love this series Dark Winds. I wish it was an everyday series! I love seeing Native American shows and wish there were more of them! I loved Graham Greene in all his shows, and love Zahn! It’s very refreshing to see Native American actors/shows as I am sick of BLACK being portrayed TOO MUCH! This country needs to devote attention equally to all colors/races!!!!! Just my opinion.. . hopefully Dark Wind will be a permanent series!!!!!!
On a grande scale, That’s all Hollywood mainly now pushed are black people over other races. Tv series, game shows, day time talk shows, commercials…u name it. Its black dominated. Part of the democratic agenda. You’re right however, it is refreshing to see change.
Graham Greene is Canadian and has been a fixture on a ton of shows/movies here or filmed here. Finally Indigenous, Native, Aboriginal, Māori, etc. are finally getting the attention, stories, and parts around the world they should have been getting for decades.
I enjoyed Season 1, but was sorely disappointed that I would have to pay for Season 2, so did not watch it. I already pay for the streaming service, so I shouldn’t have to pay again!! That’s just wrong.
I don’t know where you were watching it? I watched all six episodes of season two on AMC
free.
I hope it keeps it’s same flavor, adding “guests stats” thinking it will enrich the series has killed simular type shows in the past. Then writers change, plot changes for some type of agenda, a domino effect……… hopefully not, it’s great and hopefully it will keep it’s flavor…….
what a great tv watching
Can’t wait for season 3!!!
I’m so happy dark winds wiĺ be back. I’m hoping Bernadette and chee finally get together.
Waiting for S3 is awful! I HOPE it means MORE spisodes than 6 or 8. I cannot get enough of McClarnon and Gordon.!!! And the Atcittys. I hope to seen Dean get back home, he shouldn’t have had to serve when family depended on HIM.
THis is my most FAVORITE series ever, I have it on several times a day, just to see Leaphorn and Chee!!! Nothing else as good to watch, and this has been a LONG time coming. I havent tired of it even a tad. Imressed with the bad guys, well-written and really BAD. Hoping ‘Bern will be back EARLY in S3!!!
ADORE this series.
Please, AMC, continue this series until all books exhausted!!
I FORGOT to add about Bruce Greenwood, love this actor too sInce I saw THIS (Available only in Amazon) “The Soul Taker”
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203933/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_94_act
You will love this.
Waiting for DW season 3 is HARD….. I don’t like, at MY age, to wish my life away!!!
I would like to adopt McClarnon and Gordon!!
Looking forward to it.
My husband and I both love this show. Glad its getting an extra episodes.
I am so looking forward to this. This series is fantastic. If you haven’t watched it yet, you need to. It’s got a strong cast. Zahn McClarnon is so good in it.
Finally, looking forward to it!
Fantastic show!
One of the best series on TV…can’t wait.
Time to do a binge on the first 2 seasons. I buy it on iTunes so I can watch as many times as I want whenever as I don’t have AMC+. I do watch the episodes live.
If you like Dark Winds, I highly, highly recommend the Aussie movies and tv series:
Mystery Road – 1st movie
.
Goldstone – 2nd movie
.
Mystery Road – tv series
.
All star Aaron Pederson who plays Detective Jay Swan.
They all take place in different areas of the Outback of Western Australia. The scenery is very similar to Dark Winds
Noted. Thank you for the recommendations. I haven’t heard of any of those.
One of my favorites!
I am so looking forward to this. If you haven’t seen it, you are missing a great series. It’s sort of western noir meets crime thriller and the actors are phenomenal, particularly Zahn McClarnon.
Can’t wait. Chee is my favorite; he is so wonderfully old fashioned for a young guy. This show is pure class, and I thank AMC for showing it on TV, so we don’t have to stream it. But Jenna Elfman, really?
Any chance AMC(+) will license this to Netflix eventually? My husband and I (and my in-laws) blew through the first 2 seasons.
Looking forward to it. And this needs more than eight episodes.
