The Dead Boy Detectives have crossed over to the TV afterlife.
Netflix has cancelled the DC Comics-inspired series after just one season, TVLine has confirmed. The cancellation comes four months after Dead Boy Detectives‘ first (and now only) season dropped on April 25.
Based on DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, Matt Wagner and Malcolm Jones III, Dead Boy Detectives respectively starred George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, teenagers born decades apart who found each other in death and solved mysteries in the afterlife. As the brains and brawn behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency, Edwin and Charles would “do anything to stick together — including escaping evil witches, Hell and Death herself,” per the official synopsis. “With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.”
Dead Boy Detectives was an extension of Netflix’s Sandman universe (based on another DC comic book from Gaiman), but fear not: The Sandman is coming back for Season 2, with new cast additions including Jack Gleeson (aka Game of Thrones‘ King Joffrey), Indya Moore (Pose) and Barry Sloane (Revenge).
Our sister site Variety was first to report Dead Boy Detectives‘ demise. Will you miss the show? Tell us in a comment below.
Considering Neil Gaiman and everything that is coming out about him I wouldn’t expect Sandman to survive past season 2.
Sorry AJ, what is happening ? Haven’t read anything
Five different women have accused him of sexual assault. This last one even had a voicemail of him offering $60,000 not to come forward. He’s done for.
I loved dead boy detectives. I prefer it over Sandman.
Stuff like this makes it hard to watch a series before you know there will be at least a 2nd season. Why invest the time when the networks/streamers don’t invest anything in it? This was a fun and easy watch, was looking forward to more.
A lot of shows have great first seasons and tell a complete story and then try to stretch it out for more seasons and they just arent as good.. so sometimes just having one solid season is enough.
Of course, it’s nextflix. Everything ends after 1 season
Nonsense. The writer did poor job creating such bad serie and people don´t watch. Then this happens.
On the brightside, we got to see a tweaked season 1 because Netflix saved it from the WBD bloodbath. It was originally ordered to series at Max. But, I would have liked more.
We don’t watch these shows because even they do well Netflix still cancels them. They want everything to be Bridgerton or Strange Things. I really liked this show. I need to just keep to books. At least authors get to conclude their stories and aren’t cancelled in the middle of a chapter.
OMG Netflix cancelled a good show? That never happened before lol
Anyway, what with all these streamings and networks who are always so obsessed with new (unknown)content that they have to cancel the better (known) shows. I was hoping for a season 2
So incredibly bummed about this.
Loved the show, easy to watch with likable characters and storyline. Hate getting invested and then being disappointed when it isn’t continued. Not going to know what happened with Niko.
Booooooooo!
I saw that coming but was hoping for another season. There was a potential for better crossovers with Sandman.
Agreed, I thought the show was awesome, but it was never going to be popular. It’s the definition of niche appeal. I’m very glad we got as much of it as exists. The world needs projects like this even if they’re never break out hits, it doesn’t mean it failed.
I’m not surprised. It took a while to grab my attention. I wound up liking it the more I watched of it and probably would have watched a second season.
Tell me that’s not true.
This was such a great show with great characters.
I want more. Come on Netflix give it a chance. So much potential for a cult following.
Your making a mistake not to renew this show. It was very very entertaining. I watched it thru twice.
I really like this show, but I wondered if it would survive. Didn’t seem like it was getting a lot of views
Thankfully it can be watched as a mini series with enough things tightened up. Would have watched more if they made more, likeable cast
SPOILERS:
We’re never gonna REALLY know what happened with Niko, though. They implied she was somehow alive somewhere.
It seemed this would happen, but I was really hoping it had enough views to stick around. I really enjoyed it. I thought maybe Sandman having a season two would help its chances. It had a decent close as a season ender, but it set things up for more seasons for sure.
Bummer.
I liked it and was looking forward to another season.
Netflix does it again.
Can you say:
– The Society
– The Irregulars
– The Midnight Club
– Resident Evil
– The Imperfects
…and many more
It’s incredibly annoying.
Shocked🙄
I’m like really annoyed about this. I loved season 1 and I thought it charted pretty well? I guess it’s too expensive. They always cancel the great ones.
JUST noticed I hadn’t heard anything about this show in awhile and was getting worried.
It’s really too bad – I enjoyed this show for what it was and what it could grow to be. But this is a clear case of where streaming needs to change – this show could have been done for a network – it would have fit right in on classic WB or CW. On a network schedule and budget this show would have looked almost as good and already have 22 episodes in the can. At this point, this show has only eight episodes over THREE YEARS. And the lead actors are ghosts who shouldn’t age – they already don’t look young enough for their “dead boy” characters.
Well that sucks.
This show was literally one of the best things Netflix put out in a long time. Unfortunately both Netflix and WB seem really committed to shovelling reality TV down our throats.
I agree: I hate reality shows, too. But they’re cheap to produce and they get big audiences. Don’t blame the studios, blame the audiences.
Not a surprise and it’s unfortunate that shows don’t last much than 1-2 seasons with rare exceptions like a “Stranger Things”.
.
Netflix can’t market any shows or else they’d go bankrupt with dozens of shows/movies that get dropped weekly.
.
And that binge model has gotten old… this is why they’re playing with dropping their shows a few episodes at a time and spreading out a season over a few months as a posed to dumping it all in one day and hope you remember to watch that weekend or else it’s forgotten and then cancelled as so many before and so many more after this one.
I’m not surprised. Netflix has no patience for low ratings. But it was a clever concept and well acted and filmed. It did have a bi or gay character (no spoiler!) And that may be part of the reason, but more explicit characters exist on Netflix, and even cable, so maybe not. Plus, I haven’t read the comic, so I’m not sure if that was new to the show.
Unsurprising ’cause Netflix, but very disappointing.
Why just why???😭😭😭😭R.I.P Dead boy detectives. I’m just gonna need a minute mourn this loss
Such a shame, I really enjoyed this show. The cast were excellent. We’ve got shows that have gone on for decades some should have ended a why ago. I think part of the problem is unless you have Netflix you are not going to see many ads elsewhere., unless it stars some one relatively famous.
Well, darn!
Dead Boy Detectives was a wonderful show, and we were really looking forward to season 2…
Heartbroken! Absolutely loved season one!!
Typical Netflix. Every good show gets one season. There’s no point in watching anymore.
Darn, well I hope the actors get more roles in tv/movies soon I enjoyed the cast. Hopefully whatever they’re in won’t be on Netflix.
