After she broke her ankle, it began to swell. Putting ice on it reduced the swelling.

In essence the word means to get bigger. This can be split up into two ways,

1. In the physical sense like a persons body. I'm actually a nurse so when I see a part of a persons body that gets bigger, maybe because of in infection or inflammation, then that part of the body is said to swell. A lot of times it is said in its figurative form, swollen, for example,

"His knee was swollen for days before he decided to go into hospital."
OR
"There was swelling around her ankle after her heels broke and she it had twisted."

2. A lot of people also use to word to describe something that gets bigger, but outside of the human body. For example,

"The population in this country has been swelling to a point where we can't sustain any more people."
OR
"The sound from the concert swelled to an almighty roar that shocked its audience!"

There is also an old fashioned way to say swell which is an American informal way to say something is good or well,

"Everything is swell!"

Bloat - expand with fluid or gas
Ex: I drank so much water, I feel bloated now

A: I have never heard the word "tumid" before. I wouldn't use it when speaking. "Swell" is a bit outdated too, something you might hear an old person say

A: The definition of swelling is an a part of the body enlarging abnormally. Turgescence is the process of swelling happening.

A: "Swollen" is technically the past participle of "swell", but there is very little difference. You could, for example, describe something as either "swelling" or being "swollen" and it doesn't really matter, although "swollen" I think would be the more common descriptor.

The only real difference I can think of is that if an object is in the process of actively expanding (or repeatedly expanding and contracting) then you may describe it as "swelling", otherwise you would say "swollen" which implies a more stable state.

A: It depends on context.

If someone says "That's swell!", that means "That's awesome!"

However, if it's used as a verb, like: "Your foot's starting to swell," it means that person probably hurt their foot somehow, so that's not good.
