So here is the final version of the poster I did for a local high school’s production of The Sound of Music.
I like the pencil sketches of the seven Von Trapp children. There’s a lot of detail there that was removed and minimized in the final piece. I could have refined and inked those pencil sketches and done a more realistic take, like I usually do, but this time I wanted things to be simplified into areas of color for the final piece.
It was a lot of work to get nine characters looking right! Normally I would ink characters in a much more complex style. I was trying to be sort of artless here.
When I inked the characters, I kept things very simple, like an animated cartoon. I threw out a lot of the detail, then carefully recolored all the black lines for a lineless look. I painted the background based on a sketch and gave the characters a subtle paper-cutout look.
It was a much more complicated piece than I’d expected when I began, and a lot of the work I did isn’t seen, or is barely seen, in the final piece. But I’m happy with that. I tried to condense and convey what people love about the musical.

Rogue and Nightcrawler from Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men. Romantic little superhero pinup commission for a friend.
Rogue was a 90s favorite of mine so I made her look a bit retro.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves gives a modern comedic sensibility to its fantasy setting, more Community than Lord of the Rings. You can almost hear the players rolling dice to see how their next plan will play out. Scheme might be more accurate. It’s partly a heist film. There’s lots of action, and few big laughs but many chuckles. It’s a smartly made film which goes for a tone which is difficult to nail, and largely succeeds with it.
The film is just grounded enough that it doesn’t break the fourth wall to wink at the audience. But it never shakes the feeling that this is all taking place in 2023, rather than in some forgotten ancient age of giants. Or at least a version of 2023 that has wizards instead of smartphones. This appears to be intentional, an extension of how Dungeons & Dragons is a game played by modern-day people improvising around the kitchen table, who are only in character to the extent that they need to be. This could have felt like a CW TV show, but the film aims higher than that.
