The social media comprises of diverse applications with different main functions configurations a... more The social media comprises of diverse applications with different main functions configurations and characteristics. This paper is to gain insight into the potential use of social media in the context of higher education and particularly into the teacher use of Facebook in their teaching. The literature review presented in this paper begins by synthesizing the definition and types of social media and exploring its characteristic as well as critically interrogating related studies as to how social media, particularly Facebook, is being used in order to connect learners and support teachers teaching. It can be concluded that social media comprises of diverse applications with different main functions configurations and characteristics. The most prevalent and high profile social media is SNSs (Social Network Sites), for example Facebook, that has proved its ability to assist education through numbers of studies which show its benefits in education, but then, again at the same time, has its own drawback if it is not used effectively in an educational context. Accordingly, more studies are needed pertaining the Facebook and its implication in order to examine students-teacher interaction and students' engagement. ABSTRAKSI: " Media Sosial dan Perlaksanannya di Pengajian Tinggi ". Media sosial terdiri daripada pelbagai aplikasi dengan ciri-ciri utama fungsi dan konfigurasi yang berlainan. Kertas ini adalah untuk mendapatkan maklumat tentang potensi penggunaan media sosial dalam konteks pendidikan tinggi dan terutamanya penggunaan Facebook dalam pengajaran guru. Kajian literatur dalam kertas ini bermula dengan mensintesis definisi dan jenis media sosial dan meneroka ciri-cirinya secara kritikal yang berkaitan tentang bagaimana media sosial, terutamanya Facebook, digunakan dalam menyokong pengajaran guru dan pembelajaran pelajar. Dapat disimpulkan bahawa media sosial terdiri daripada pelbagai aplikasi dengan fungsi dan ciri-ciri yang berbeza. Penggunaan media sosial yang tertinggi adalah SNSs (Social Network Sites), sebagai contoh Facebook, yang telah membuktikan keupayaan untuk membantu pendidikan melalui beberapa kajian terdahulu yang mana ia menyenaraikan faedah-faedahnya dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran, tetapi pada masa yang sama, sosial media mempunyai kelemahan sendiri jika ia tidak digunakan dengan berkesan dalam konteks pendidikan. Oleh itu, lebih banyak kajian diperlukan berkenaan dengan Facebook dan perlaksanaannya untuk mengkaji interaksi pelajar-guru dan penglibatan pelajar.

Situated learning theory holds that effective education requires learning that is embedded in aut... more Situated learning theory holds that effective education requires learning that is embedded in authentic contexts of practice, wherein students engage in increasingly more complex tasks within social communities. Opponents of the theory point out its failure to account for individual differences among students and its insufficient emphasis on knowledge acquisition. In this essay, by using the qualitative methods, I describe situated learning and review the arguments for and against it, contrasting participatory and acquisitive learning models as they apply in classroom settings. The view that all learning should be situated if it is to be effective is too strong. Such a statement ignores the fact that learning is a matter of acquiring knowledge before one can participate effectively in the situation or real setting. The teacher acts as a provider, facilitator, and mediator of knowledge; students are able to learn from that knowledge and practice it in group activities. In turn, students arrive at a new level of knowledge and understanding based on their experience as a real practitioner in the group or community. The different norms and values attached to participation and acquisition complement one another, and either one alone would be insufficient. I then assess religious education in Brunei Darussalam, where education has traditionally focused on memorization and written exams. I suggest that a blend of participatory and acquisitive learning models may be the most effective approach to classroom instruction.

This paper intends to explore students' perceptions of social media in the context of the Melayu ... more This paper intends to explore students' perceptions of social media in the context of the Melayu Islam Beraja education and its challenges in the context of the Melayu Islam Beraja B philosophy. It reports the findings regarding student use of Facebook features and their perceptions of its use within the Melayu Islam Beraja module at the University of Brunei Darussalam. These findings indicate student observations of pedagogical, social, technological and cultural affordances as well as their concerns about using Facebook. Data was gathered by distributing questionnaires. The key idea of the findings is that students find peer-to-peer interactions on Facebook potentially more valuable than teacher-to-student interactions, as it is noted that peer-to-peer activity ranked higher than student-tutor activity. The findings also confirm that the Facebook group has the potential to be used as a complementary space for the Melayu Islam Beraja module as it has important features that can support teaching and learning.

Spread of new communication technologies, and above all the internet as well as communication networks, has dramatically infl uenced identities of individuals and their cultures. A study of new ICT (Information and Communication Technology), particularly as the internet, is changing the way the world works and will continue to do so into the future. By its unprecedented power to move and process information, it is impacting on global living patterns, culture, and governance; in fact, the internet impacts on every aspect of our society today. The question is whether a country like Brunei Darussalam can endure preserving its values, while the internet keeps exerting a damaging infl uence that can threaten its identity? Thus, this critical review will focus on the internet as a new form of ICT and look at the social impact of its potential threat to the identity of Brunei Darussalam society. IKHTISAR: " Teknologi Komunikasi Maklumat, Identiti, dan Masyarakat Brunei: Satu Kajian Literatur Kritikal ". Kemodenan mengurangkan sifat berbahaya keseluruhan kawasan-kawasan tertentu dan mod kehidupan, namun pada masa yang sama memperkenalkan parameter risiko baru sebahagian besarnya atau benar-benar tidak diketahui pada era sebelumnya. Penyebaran teknologi-teknologi komunikasi baru, dan di atas semua itu internet serta rangkaian komunikasinya, telah mempengaruhi secara mendadak identiti individu dan budaya mereka. Kajian teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi baru, terutamanya internet, telah mengubah cara bekerja dan akan terus membuat pelbagai perubahan di masa hadapan. Kuasa yang ada pada internet dalam menghantar dan memproses maklumat, memberi kesan kepada corak hidup global, budaya, dan pentadbiran; bahkan pada setiap aspek kehidupan masyarakat pada hari ini. Persoalannya ialah adakah sesebuah negara seperti Brunei Darussalam boleh bertahan dalam memelihara nilai-nilai murni, sedangkan internet mempunyai pengaruh yang merosakkan dan boleh mengancam identiti sebuah negara? Oleh itu, kajian ini penting dengan memberi fokus kepada internet sebagai salah satu bentuk teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi yang baru, dan juga melihat ancamannya yang berpotensi untuk memberi kesan kepada masalah sosial dan identiti masyarakat Brunei Darussalam.
