This study contributes to this debate, by providing a conciliatory stance, aligned with the neurodiversity paradigm. A scoping literature review on Pathological Demand Avoidance (and related terms) has been conducted to systematically identify the everyday life functioning features mentioned in the empirical research as key for children with PDA, using the taxonomy of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF). Results show a significant overlap of key functioning features between children with PDA and Autistic children, as well as with children with other diagnoses such as ADHD. We argue that by adopting a neurodiversity stance, which the ICF can help promote, the debate around what constitutes PDA and what constitutes Autism becomes less relevant. It is more important to focus on the specific and identified everyday life participation issues that may, at certain points in time, become overwhelming for Autistic children (with or without PDA) and to children with PDA (with or without co-existing diagnoses).

A survey of experienced teachers working directly with children with autism in both inclusive and special schools was undertaken in winter 2018-19. Five hundred and sixty questionnaires were distributed and 340 returned (61% response); after cleansing, 242 responses were analysed. Over a quarter of respondents had received no instruction regarding autism during initial teacher education; almost half had undertaken no continuing professional development on the topic. Special school teachers reported higher overall confidence, but levels remained low within a number of key domains. Teachers identified a need for appropriate teacher education regarding theory, relevant practical strategies and mentorship/supervision. Implications regarding inclusive practice and teacher education in these countries are identified.

Questions were open-ended and interviewers used appropriate prompts/probes. Interviews were carried out with mothers, fathers, siblings (as appropriate within the individual family context) and, where possible, the child/young person(s) with autism in two rural coastal areas of England: Cornwall and North/West Norfolk. Access to families was obtained via local National Autistic Society groups: NAS Cornwall and NAS West Norfolk. Twenty-two families from Cornwall (n=9, 24 individuals) and Norfolk (n=13, 25 individuals) were recruited to the study in autumn 2018. Thirty-five...

Education has proven to be an effective intervention strategy that improves the quality of life of children with autism and their families. However, governmental austerity policies have increased disadvantage in coastal areas of England with a detrimental impact on people with disabilities. This qualitative study explored the lives of families living with autism in rural coastal England. Mothers, fathers, grandparents and young people from 21 families living with autism in West Norfolk and Cornwall shared their experience through semi-structured interviews that were conducted in early 2019. Families identified positive and negative aspects of living in these areas, including barriers preventing access to and inclusion in education. Artistically gifted teenagers (N = 32) from different regions of Slovakia participated in the research. Based on the research results, we consider the gallery environment stimulating for artistic talent of a person in a specific way. The authors of the study confirmed that in the observed group of artistically gifted teenagers, their artistic talent was positively impacted. Progress was captured in specific components of artistic expression (imagination, fantasy and creativity), which was identified as direct influence of visiting galleries.

Using particular researches the authors describe the possibilities and limits of art therapy interventions during the life journey of adolescents, specifically in the areas of resilience, sociability, disability and difficult life situations. It is in the period of adolescence that it is typical for people to happen to be in difficult life situations, and one of the ways of helping them is through establishing contacts and relationships not only between the therapists and clients but also within group relationships and interaction, needed for full autonomous life of clients. The paper is a partial output of the project KEGA 069/UK-4/2015 Supporting social adaptation of adolescents with disabilities through group oriented art therapy.
