Country templates
Need help?
Hi, I just noticed you've started an Udmurt Wikipedia, that's great :-). Unfortunately I don't speak the language, as much as I'd like to, but I'd really like to help you get some articles started anyway. There's only so much I can do, but I was thinking of maybe creating some country stubs - just with the basic template, flags, basic info etc - if you'd be willing to translate the basic terms (population, motto, capital, etc). Maybe there's a list of world capitals spelled in Udmurt on the net that I could consult (or maybe I'll just have to start studying the language)? If I do just one hundred countries, we'll be the sixth Finno-Ugric lingo on the front page - what a great promotion! 80.186.33.84 16:39, 1 ноября 2005 (UTC), from the Finnish Wikipedia.
- I registered now. Olli 16:47, 1 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- Hello Olli, and welcome to the Udmurt Wikipedia! Of course, we need the templates. Unfortunately, there is no list of countries or cities spelled in Udmurt on the net (exclude the main toponyms of Udmurtia and adjacent regions (see a related paper on my website). But the names of cities, countries etc. are mostly the same as in Russian. About the main terms: please make up the complete list of this terms, and I'll translate them into Udmurt. --Denis 21:28, 1 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- Great :) I think the best way for me to contribute would definitely be the country stubs at first, so you'd basically have to list these countries in Udmurt. Then I'll probably import this template from the Finnish Wikipedia (basically the same in the English one as well). I guess the terms are these:
- flag (and "xxx's flag")
- coat of arms (and "xxx's coat of arms")
- motto
- location
- official languages (and this is a bit tricky, since I'd have to know the names of the languages in Udmurt. There seems to be some on the main page.)
- Capital (and "capital's location")
- President
- Prime minister
- Area:
- combined/altogether
- water (% of the area)
- list of countries per area (and then how to say "112th" or "at place 112")
- Population
- altogether
- density
- List of countries per population (and the place)
- GDP (gross domestic product) (and then "list of countries.....")
- GDP/inhabitant
- Time zone (and how to say "UTC+1" etc)
- Internet subdomain
- International dialling code
- Wow, that turned out to be more than I thought! Another thing that might be useful would be short sentences like "XXX is a country in xxx" (and the names of the continents, as it would be nice to have something else on a page besides the template). Oh, and the name of the template, or shall it just be "Template:Country"? I'll also probably have to look in the Russian wikipedia for cyrillic translitterations of names for presidents/capital cities, I take it that the differences aren't too big (or that my mistakes are probably quite easy to fix). Thanks! Olli 21:53, 1 ноября 2005 (UTC)

- I just noticed that I missed some, there's also:
- National anthem
- Independence
- Currency
- (and "list of contries...")
- I'll probably import a few templates already, and translate them later. Olli 16:16, 2 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- I just noticed that I missed some, there's also:
List of the terms (translated)
- flag (and "xxx's flag") – флаг (for Genitive form: the main pattern is xxx+лэн, e.g. Буркина-Фасо/Буркина-Фасолэн, the same would be right for names with ending -ия, but -я should be removed, e.g. Финляндия/Финляндилэн; the word «flag» should be used in possessive form «флагез» – e.g. Чехилэн флагез, Ираклэн флагез and so on)
- coat of arms (and "xxx's coat of arms") – герб (гербез in Genitive form)
- motto – девиз (I would add also anthem ‘гимн’)
- location – is the term really to be translated? Russian wiki doesn't translate it, because it is used only in file names like «LocationXXX.png». My variant (if needed): интыяськем
- official languages – there is difference between the concepts of so called «state language» (Russ. государственный язык) and «official language» (Russ. официальный язык) in Russian&Udmurt terminology, but the difference is vague. Nevertheless, some authors try to distinguish this terms. I do not want to participate in that kind of discussions. The simplest variant is, of course, официальной кыл, but I think that another way is also available: «кылыз» (literally ‘it's [the country's] language’) if only one official language, and «кылъёсыз» («it's languages»), if many. What do you think about?
- Use Russian names for languages (Udmurt names are not equal to them, and I'll correct the names later).
- Capital (and "capital's location") – шоркар (about «location»: see above. What do you mean exactly? Perhaps, the geographical coordinates, e.g. 35°40′ N 51°25′ E? My variant, if really needed: шоркарлэн интыяськемез)
- President – президент
- Prime minister – премьер-министр
- Area – территория
- combined/altogether – ваньмыз
- water (% of the area) – ву (%)
- list of countries per area (and then how to say "112th" or "at place 112") – музъемзылэн быдӟалаезъя радъям кунъёс (lit. ‘states ordered according the size of their territories’).
- 112th – 112-тӥ (with noun; if without noun, then 112-тӥез: 112-тӥ интыын (‘at place 112’, more preferable form), 112-тӥез (‘that is at place 112’)
- Population – Улӥсьёс (lit. ‘inhabitants’)
- altogether – ваньмыз
- density – плотность
- List of countries per population (and the place) – улӥсьёссылэн лыдзыя радъям кунъёс (lit. ‘states ordered according the number of their inhabitants’)
- GDP (gross domestic product) (and then "list of countries.....") – ВВП (Russian abbreviature, there is no Udmurt term for it). List of… – ВВП-зылэн быдӟалаезъя радъям кунъёс
- GDP/inhabitant – ВВП адямилы быдэ
- Time zone (and how to say "UTC+1" etc) – Дырлэн зонаез (Гринвич дыр+1)
- Internet subdomain – домен
- International dialling code – калыккуспо телефон код
- Independence – Нимаз кун луон
- Currency – Валюта
- List of... – Дуннеысь кунъёслэн валютаоссы (lit. ‘currencies of the states of the world’)
Please give your comments. --Denis 19:24, 2 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- Great!! The infobox is Шаблон:Country here and I made an article - as a test: Финляндия. There are a few Russian dates + mistakes + the HDI index is not translated (should it?), but otherwise it looks neat. If you could still translate something, this list would be really useful - it's not like all the explanation is needed, just the names. There are 196 countries in the world, so this'll be a lot of work. (Note: I didn't really use the template on the Finland page but rather edited it "raw", since I feel it's easier that way). Another good thing would be to make short stubs of all the articles on the infobox - at least I feel that in smaller/young wikipedias the red links there seem particularly "ugly", in a way (population - GDP - capital etc.)Olli 21:55, 2 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- I made some corrections to the template (some Russian words removed, caps added, some Udmurt words changed for euphony, some mistakes fixed – please compare the versions). What is «HDI»? About templates to prevent red links: it is a good idea to create more stubs, but we have only one for the present, namely {{stub}}... --Denis 22:38, 2 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- HDI is "Human development index" (here). Thanks for correcting the template - perhaps it would be best to correct this Шаблон:Country too - I can copy your corrections there. By preventing red links i didn't mean new templates but rather simply creating short new articles on topics found in the infobox, such as "capital city", "language", "prresident" etc. I guess that I'll just start creating new countries with their Russian names, and you can move them if they're different in Udmurt. Olli 11:04, 3 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- OK, I'll correct the new templates. Please use less italicized words: the Udmurt wiki supports only one font, namely Arial Unicode MS, but it has no italic and bold variants. Thanks for explanations about «HDI» – in Russian it sounds as «индекс человеческого развития» (Google said; I never heard such words as these before yesterday). --Denis 13:16, 3 ноября 2005 (UTC)

Asia
Hi. Most of the European countries are now completed, and I've brought a Шаблон:Asia from the Russian wiki - it should be translated. Also, I wish you'd have the time to check especially the article Россия, and also translate the notes in Великобритания. Thanks :) Olli 20:57, 19 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- Thnk you, Olli! I'll check the new items immediately. --Denis 06:19, 20 ноября 2005 (UTC)
Logo
New transparent logo
Hi Denis,
I've fixed the Udmurt Wikipedia logo. . Please replace it.
Also, I made a new template for table of contents that might look better, please see: this page; another suggestion at this page... the text is still in English. You don't have to use them, but I wanted to suggest them anyhow.
Best wishes. --Node ue 09:41, 21 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- The logo is switched; thank you very much!
- I am not intended to change the table of contents in this wiki right now, but of course I'll keep your variant in mind! Thank you again.
- This page is empty...

Milestone logo: 100
All European countries are done. We're approaching 100, so I took the liberty of creating a logo for fun - what do you think, should we put it on? :p Olli 15:15, 20 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- The logo is great! :) --Denis 16:40, 20 ноября 2005 (UTC)
Text for country stubs
Hi. I was thinking of adding some extra text, a few short sentences, to the country stubs such as: "W is a country in Northern/Southern/Western/Eastern Europe/Asia/Africa. It's neighbours are Q, A, S and E. W's population is 2 000 000 and it's area is 30 000 km2. The country's capital is Z." Of course it's mainly the same information as in the template, but the article still gets much better. Also I could add the sections, like here - History, Politics, Geography, Economy, Demographics, Adm. divisions, Culture. One possible thing would also be articles about capitals or other cities, with a similar "base". Do you think you could translate this? Olli 18:02, 25 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- The idea seems to be worthy.
- W – Уйпал/Лымшор/Шунды пуксён пал/Шунды ӝужан пал Европаысь/Азиысь/Африкаысь кун. Солэн бускельёсыз: Q, A, S но E. Wын улӥсьёслэн лыдзы – 2 000 000 адями, музъемезлэн быдӟалаез – 30 000 км2. Wлэн шоркарез – Z.
- История, Политика, География, Экономика, Демография, Кун пуш улосъёс, Культура
- Thanks. I just remembered - there's also "central" and "south-west", "north-west" etc, not sure if the latter is necessary. "Middle East" would also be important. Olli 23:16, 25 ноября 2005 (UTC)
- «Middle East» – Шор Шунды ӝужан пал. «Central» – центральной. About «south-west» and so on: Udmurt language has no universally recognized terms for compass' points, excluding the cardinal points (N, W, S, E), therefore I don't know precisely how we should translate such terms as «south-west». Of course, we can made the simply word compounds by translating the English words in consecutive order, e.g.: «south-west» > south+west > лымшор+шунды пуксён пал > лымшор – шунды пуксён пал (south-west Estonia ~ лымшор – шунды пуксён пал Эстония), «north-east Russia» ~ уйпал – шунды ӝужан пал Россия etc. But these constructions are unwieldy, and I hesitate whether they are entirely comprehensible for persons who are not well-educated... --Denis 10:35, 26 ноября 2005 (UTC)

Africa
Hi :) Finally Asia is (almost) done, so I brought an Africa-template from the Russian wiki - it should be translated. (If you'd like America better, go ahead :) Also, I need some help with Иордан шурлэн шунды пуксён пал ярдурез and Газа сектор - I suppose It'd be better if you made short articles of them rather than me.
