If a strange man were to appear outside our home two days before Christmas carrying a bag filled with all his worldly possessions in one hand, a frozen chicken in the other, and wearing a crooked smile that said, “Please, let me in,” most of us would make our excuses and shut the door. The versions of ourselves that exist only in our minds are more open and giving than this. We are the sort of people who buy a sandwich for the homeless person outside the station, who give a percentage of our earnings away to good causes, who donate our old winter coats to Shelter. But if we are really honest, there is a limit to our kindness, a cap on our goodwill. Our charity tends to end at the front door. Not so for Rob and Dianne Parsons.
