This is a moth of the family Saturniidae and is endemic to New Guinea and northern Australia. The Males are darker and smaller than the Females.  Only the Males have the long tails, but the Females have much better color. Hercules moths do not have a mouth and will not eat, but survive on food stores from when they were caterpillars.  It has an adult lifespan of only 10-14 days where its main objective is to find a mate and reproduce. The female will emit a pheromone that can attract a male from 2km (1.2mi) away.
